1705792L1Bath: From My Shop in Bath 1705. First edition. Disbound. Good. 7" by 4.5" . None. A very scarce eighteenth century pamphlet defending the healing properties of the water in Bath to one Dr Radcliffe of Tunbridge Wells. ESTC reference no: T62772.In this letter the anonymous author appeals to Radcliffe who is an 'enemy to our Bath-waters' as he vilifies them 'as good for little or nothing'. In the pamphlet the author addresses rumours that Radcliffe the physician to George of Denmark planned to poison the waters of Bath with a toad. This rumour has become a part of the legend of Beau Nash of Bath who was said to have calmed people's fears claiming he could neutralise the toad's poison with music which resulted in him raising money for an orchestra to play at the baths. The author tells Dr Radcliffe that he needs to stop speaking ill of the waters in Bath as it was once his favourite 'Tunbridg has been your Favourite formerly next Bath and then Tunbridg again; which argues you have much more fancy than judgement'. Unbound as issued. A very scarce work with this being the first edition. A second edition 'improv'd and corrected' was printed in the same year. Unbound as issued. Externally generally smart. A few light chips to the extremities. Several marks to the front leaf. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright. Occasional light spots to pages. Good From My Shop in Bath unknown

1770725L17London: William Bingley 1770. Paperback. Very Good Indeed. 10.5" by 8" . None. A very scarce controversial issue of the eighteenth century radical newspaper 'The North Briton'. The first and only edition of this issue.Being issue 197 of the periodical or 51 of the continuation. This particular issue was published by William Bingley who was gaoled in Newgate and then in King's Bench Prison due to the contents of this issue and issue 50. He was released after two years.'The North Briton' was written anonymously though is closely associated with John Wilkes. Its 45th issue was famous due to the similar number of court cases spawned by the contents of that issue. This particular issue of 'The North Briton' is a letter addressed to William Murray 1st Earl Mansfield and is an attack on his character and his decisions as a figure in parliament. There is mention of the 'Junius' the pseudonym used for tracts written in the 'Public Advertiser' attacking the government. There is discussion of Murray's own view of the Common Law of England and his involvement in commercial law. The author mocks Mansfield for the trials by jury regarding the printing of material attacking the government. The jury found several individuals innocent of libel and this work states 'Ah! my Lord you start! the idea of a jury! that disconcerts your Lordship haunts you wherever you go and proves the plague of your life'. The author of this work defends the concept of a jury and criticises Mansfield for being against this. A very scarce political pamphlet. In modern paper wraps. Externally very smart. A few light marks to wraps. Internally firmly bound. A few light spots to the first leaf. Pages are bright with occasional light spots. Prior owner's occasional ticks to the margins.
