A few creases to the page edges but overall a very good example of this rare edition. ---- No copy of this edition listed on Worldcat or Copac. ---- Fairburn was located at this address from 1820 to 1842.- P.A.H. Blue boards white paper spine. 10.5 cms x 18.5 cms. xv1 'Directions to the Binder'3859 Index 12 engraved plates collated as correct and situated as directed to binder uncut edges and unopened at least in part; internally clean tight and unmarked no provenance markings at all with no obvious gutter openings; edges being uncut sometimes have thin marginal brown strips to extended leaves would thus rate it internally Fine for age; covers are generally clean and apparently as originally issued spine label has short title 'third edition' and price of 8s. .i.e.8 shillings outer corners inevitably somewhat rubbed or bumped lower spine paper is missing along front joint for length of c. 4 cms and width of 1 cm. leaving bottom ends of some gatherings exposed a further much smaller chip to bottom back joint top spine good so at least Good rating for age for covers. Hooper's name does not actually appear anywhere in this edition. Aside from bottom spine this is a remarkably good copy of this ipopular work exactly as issued. This 3rd edition is moreover apparently extremely scarce I have been unable to locate any other copy mentioned on the web at time of listing being indeed significantly enlarged from the 334 pp. of the 1814 UK 2nd edition with no index pagination mentioned. They form part of a collection of 31 tales called the Buds and Blossoms series published around 1853 retailing at a penny apiece. Some if not all are attributed to Hannah Ransome Geldart. Each story comes with a couple of illustrations. The other titles are: The Fir Tree's Story; The Fishermen's Children; Little Peepy; Rabbits and Peewits; Alice and Her Bird; Little Charley; A Doll's Story; The Faithful Dog; Spring and Summer; The Hero Without Courage; The Children's Visit to the Sea; Busy Bees; The New Ascent of Mont Blanc. Overall in REMARKABLE CONDITION for an ephemeral children's book this early. 15 pp including the insides of the covers. With delightful nine HAND-COLOURED wood engravings including two vignettes all presumably engraved by Calvert but his name only appears clearly on the front cover as Sculptor. No note of the illustrator - but very 'typical ' of the period. A Very Good Plus to Near Fine copy. Published by Darton and Co. Tinted lithographs of Swiss views 20 most around Lake Geneva & Mont Blanc but also Berne Thun Chute du Rhein etc. some with Lithographer named Th. Muller. Oblong quarto 288 x 215mm brown blind-stamped cloth with gilt title & Swiss emblem tips worn/gilt dulled 20 plates mounted at spine only a few blank guards present. Image size 180x118mm with publisher Briquet et Fils and printer's name Lemercier and in one or two cases Th. Muller lithographer credited below is title of view and all surrounded by ruled line about 1cm. from the image. Some edges dusty and a bit tatty but only edges affected. Fine coloured lithographic plates each with beautifully printed sharp detail. This collection appears to be complete - if all images had guard-sheets width of spine could fit more. Lithography well printed by Lemercier an established Parisian printer Briquet who sold these view-books was based in Geneva but later had ties with publishers in other Swiss cities British Museum has almost identical copy with 6 more views ref. 1958-0712-3024-1-26. 1837T210029This Fourth Edition dated 1837 which genuinely can be considered as a "First thus" includes a preface to the Third Edition in which the author states that she has added: "some verses illustrative of each subject".<br />In addition to the 1833 First Edition is added "The Author's Apology". It is in effect a considerably extended "Peep" and includes within the standard pagination: "Hints for Teachers" "Questions on the lessons""Verses to be committed to memory" and finally a "List of Books for Young Children".<br />As the author herself notes that she has endeavoured to prove every statement "either by the notes or by the references prefixed to each chapter both of which are intended solely for the use of the teacher" see page xxiv.<br />Wiki notes as follows: According to Todd Pruzan "For the better part of the 19th century Mrs. Mortimer was something of a literary superstar to an impressionable audience both in her native England and beyond."2 The <i>Peep of Day</i> series was immensely popular: over 500000 copies of the original edition were issued; it went through numerous English editions; and it was published by the Religious Tract Society in thirty-seven different dialects and languages. Writing in <i>The New Yorker</i> on 4 March 1950 Mortimer's grandniece Rosalind Constable called the book "one of the most outspokenly sadistic children's books ever written" referring to her great aunt's belief in the need to impress upon children the pains of hell that would result from wrongdoing and the rejection of salvation."<br />Like many women writers her books initially appeared anonymously as "By the Author of 'The Peep of Day.'" <br />This book is in truly excellent condition. No markings previous owner's signature or annotations. It is tight in its original publishers binding with lemon curd yellow endpages and a slightly sun-faded spine. Vellum bound ruled household book with marbled edges and endpapers and brass clasp which is mostly filled with hand-written in ink recipes for a variety of farm animal ailments and colours for shows. Includes indexes for colours and stains plus separate index for diseases of Horned Cattle at the start of the volumes. Pages numbered by hand 1-72 are mostly filled with dye recipes and recipes to cure humans from page 109-142 are varnishes dyes and stains. Pages 148 - 200 have medicines for cattle and horses. 201 - 251 are blank and there are a few odd blank sheets in between the hand-written sheets. Vellum boards slightly bowed and soiled otherwise a very clean and sound copy of a unique volume. hardcover

Scholarly anonymous introduction provides a very detailed bibliographical history of the work in various medieval version both in English and French it appears that only one copy is known of the Copland translation undated but c. 1600 located in the British Museum so this is hardly a 2nd ed. The Romance seems to originated extremely early figuring in an Icelandic Saga.
