Each print measures 11 by 14 inches edge to edge and the images measure 7 by 10 3/4 inches. An excellent group of images documenting a tour though the little known and rarely photographed mining districts of northern China. The photographer was likely attached to the Anglo-French Quicksilver and Mining Concession which had claims in the Guizhou province. Among the photographs is an image of Henry Brelich who was the chief engineer of the Concession.<br/><br/>Commencing at Kainsk the photographer travelled on the Trans-Siberian Railway to Lake Baikal Harbin then via Mukden to the coal mining towns of Fushun the coal capital Kang-shan and Tung-Hwa. There are shots of mines at Ta-miao-erh-kou Tung-hua Ta-maio-kou and Fushun as well as "Korean Miners at Chi-tao-kou" "Ta-miao-erh-kou Placer Washing Gold" and "Ssu-tao-chiang coal pits"<br/><br/>There are shots of the expedition in action: "Crossing the Hun - tributary of the Yalu" "The Expedition en route outside Mukden." "An accident en route" a group shot of the servants. Then some images of local interest such as street scenes at Mukden and Tung-hwa the "Shrine outside Ling-kai" "Inn at Kwei-tai-mao-tze" a Manchurian farm. Other images include the floating dock at Lake Baikal views of the Hun Valley the Kao-li-mutze-ling pass and the Loh chuen valley.<br/><br/>The group provides a fascinating insight into this remote part of China at the beginning of the twentieth century. The Anglo-Chinese Treaty of 1902 paved the way for English developers as it included a revision of existing mining regulations. However the new regulations which didn't come into effect until the end of 1907 were such that it proved nearly impossible for any foreign firm to gain a foothold making this expedition one of the very few to gain a concession. unknown books

The images were taken from models made by Chinese boys in Shanghai's Tushanwan orphanage. No copies online and none at auction for the past 30 years. Bound in publisher's red cloth. This one contains a color title and is bound in embossed leather with circular hand painted lozenges inset on the front and back covers. All edges gilt. The book has been rebacked but the backstrip is also embossed leather and nicely matches the rest of the binding. True to form the book is inscribed by a well wisher to Elizabeth B. Mann "sometime before their wedding Dec. 12 1859." The only discordant note is that the painting inset into the front board surrounded by a rim of gold and mother of pearl represents a sinking ship. 39467Oblong 4to. b/we plates. <br /><br />This is a reprint of an 1851 American reprint of a section of a larger work published in Germany by Rudolph Garrigue. It featured thousands of engravings by Henry Winkler and others of all areas of 19th century technology as well as literature arts and other sciences. The thirty-two plates in this reprint contain multiple images on each plate. It's a sort of visual history of marine technology from ships of classical times to modern steam-powered vessels. No publishing info. but obviously a 20th Century reprint. A wonderful source of images. Fine condition. books

Solomon and Marcolf is a medieval narrative describing the adventures and conversations of Solomon and Marcolf or Marolf. The adventures have some connection with those of Ashmedai while the conversations consist chiefly of riddles similar to those put to Solomon by the Queen of Sheba. The notes detail the treatment and assessments of patients suffering from a full range of disorders including what appears to be Alzheimer's or dementia depression the suicidal schizophrenia anxieties phobias as well as the criminally insane. The notes include disturbing accounts of force feeding and various means of restraint. Many patients are described as masturbating constantly while others are punished for "filthy habits." </p> books
