In the title 'Squire Walsingham' is a pseudonym for William Arnall Mother Osborne is a pseudonym of James Pitt. Arnall and Pitt founded the pro-Walpole Daily Gazetteer using the pseudonym Francis Walsingham and Mother Osborne. 'Horace to Fannius' is an imitation of Carm. ii. 8. In addition to this 'apology for printing a certain nobleman's epistle to Dr Sh-w--n' referes to John Baron Hervey as the Nobleman and Dr Sherwin as the addressee of the Epistle. With the text in Latin and English. A very scarce parody of this classical piece of literature. Disbound as issued. Externally bright with scattered spots. Ink spill to the top edges. Henry Sacheverell 1674-1724 was a popular preacher at Oxford University. His controversial printed sermons attracted attention in London. In 1709 he became chaplain at St Saviour’s in Southwark. In November of that year he made his most contentious speech to date attacking Catholics and dissenters by comparing the Gunpowder Plot to the execution of Charles I. Despite an order banning the printing of the sermon by the Lord Mayor he independently published it prompting the Whig government to take action. Articles of impeachment for high crimes and misdemeanours were drawn up to which Sacheverell gave an uncompromising reply. Found guilty he was banned from preaching for 3 years 1979 invoice for previous owner tucked in at front ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall . Jacob Tonson hardcover

Born into a military family in Queen’s County Ireland Edward Marcus Despard 1751–1803 joined the British Army as an ensign in 1766 and quickly rose through the ranks distinguishing himself as a military engineer and gaining recognition for his efforts during the capture of Fort San Juan from Spain in 1779. ODNB</p> <p>Despard’s career took a controversial turn when he became involved in revolutionary activities upon his return to Britain. He became affiliated with radical groups such as the London Corresponding Society and the United Irishmen ultimately leading to his arrest in November 1802 for allegedly plotting a coup against the government. At his trial in February 1803 Despard was found guilty of treason despite efforts to paint him as a victim of government conspiracy. Illustrated with engraved portraits of Queen Caroline frontispiece and Bergami and a large hand coloured folding plate showing a depiction of the Lords at the trial with a legend of the individuals present. One page with a small hole to the middle of the leaf and some offsetting to the two portrait engravings otherwise a very good copy in an attractive early fine leather binding of full mid brown calf. Both boards elaborately decorated with blind tooled multiple oval design panel within twelve ruled line border. An arc and star gilt roll has been tooled around the outside of the boards. Spine with four wide raised bands each with gilt decorations. Compartments ruled lettered and decorated in gilt. Board edge corners with gilt ruled lines. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled.</p><p>Contains a full transcript of the sensational and controversial trial instigated by George to rid himself of his wife by accusing her of Adultery the only way he could divorce her. --- A rare variant publication. Some writing erased on the reverse of the Title page vi 161; pp. Index/Contents on pp v vi. The final page - 161 - has been laid down the original page stopping at FINIS. Some VERY light inky smudge marks in the text which overall is very clean bright and tight until page 150 'Lord Justice Clerk's Charge to the Jury' where a lot of light brown patching starts and ends almost covering the whole pages. There are also some transferred ink marks from a blotter and a couple of numbers on page 158. Having said that ALL text Is mainly clear and readable if browned on those last dozen or so pages. " Only edition. Sir Francis was murdered in his home by his brother Sir Archibald. Although he was convicted his was released into the care of his family rather than sentenced to death because he was judged to be insane. This was the FIRST time an INSANITY DEFENSE was presented in a Scottish court and one of the very first trials in Great Britain to consider the criminal liability of the insane. Appears to have been published in two parts in the same year; this volume contains the two parts but only the second title page survives which is dated 1782. No author is credited only the names of the witnesses at the end of each of their evidence. Hardcover book . Original and very worn full leather binding with no title evident to spine perhaps as produced. 112pp part one and 107pp part two. Green tinted page edges. No ilustrations just the text of the trial which took place at the Consistory Court of Doctor's Commons apparently between 1778 and 1781 and accused Mrs Newton of adultery with 5 named people and 'diverse other persons'. It boasts of 'Containing the Whole of the Evidence in that very Extraorordinary Trial.' The book is complete apart from the first title page as mentioned but is overall in Poor condition. The very worn binding with losses and tears to spine is also very slack and partly detached from spine with the pages mostly held together though the last page is detached present and the last page of part one has marginal losses with a few words of the text missing but mostly of a publisher's note at the bottom.
