Top- and fore-edges gilt. Green floral endpapers. One blank sheet and frontispiece portrait of Adm Dewey accompanied by poem "Opportunity" by John J. Ingalls not accounted in pagination; i-iii iv-viii 1 2-314 315-320 with eight additional unpaginated leaves containing maps/photos. Then begins new pagination with supplement "Official History of the Operations of the First North Dakota Infantry U.S.V. in the Campaign in the Philippine Islands" by Phil H. Shortt editor of "Devils Lake News" appointed and assisted by Colonel W.C. Treumann et al; 1 2-64 65-66 blank. Publisher's preface table of contents xv chaps plus "The Voyage from San Francisco to Manila" and "Supplement" containing additional material e.g. Engineer Corps Rations Medical Department Noble Work of the Volunteer Lady Physicians etc; main text heavily illustrated with b&w photos tables and maps; First North Dakota section includes: 19 pp "The First North Dakota Infantry" text plus photos; roster lists/photos of officers/enlisted of 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Division. Condition notes: a heavily worn copy of this history with the rarely seen First North Dakota supplement personalized by a member of the 1st ND. Binding heavily worn and cocked with spine covering completely missing and cloth to boards worn through at several points. Hinges at endpapers fragile with separation apparent and some tears to paper. Title page loose/separated. Interior generally shows light tanning to coated pages and scattered smudging from handling but lacking any apparent pen/pencil notes. Pages generally intact but scattered closed tears exist. Blue pen spotting to ND supplement 62-63. Former owner has inscribed in pencil to first blank page: "Property/ of/ Henry Hanson/ Co. K 1st ND Ifty US Vol./ 1st Brigad 1 Div Pac Div/ 8 Army Corps". This is an apparent WWI era designation. Also included is an ephemeral blank "Tarjeta Postal" post card from "Filipnas 1898 y 1899" used as a bookmark. A handsome if roughly handled time capsule. The majority of the book is identical for the various units with the addition of a supplement in the rear 107pp. In this case unique to an individual unit. The name of the unit is also embossed on the cover. The supplement lists all personnel & give the history of that unit in action. This copy has wear at the corners some scuffing of the covers & chipping at the spine ends. The spine is slightly sunned. Primary problem is cracking of the leather in the gutter of the bottom of the front hinge ~3". Interior including the hinges is "fine." ; 7x10 1/2" . The Hicks-Judd Co. Pub. hardcover
