Quarto softbound stiff illus. brown wrappers black clothstrip spine xiii 239 pp. Spine fraying at tips & splitting along edges binding still tight former-owner signature & stamp; otherwise still clean tight and attractive. Illustrated with tables figures and plates. From Foreword: When the proposed right-of-way of Interstate 7.in Loudon County Tennessee was surveyed by the Tennessee Department of Transportation in 1971 this route through the relatively wide flood plain on the north side of the Tennessee River Watts Bar Reservoir obviously transected a potentially rich archaeological zone.Three prehistoric sites were found on the Higgs property in the vicinity of the right-of-way. The entire second terrace on the mainland north of a slough exhibited evidence of prehistoric occupation for at least 1000 feet. On the downstream end of this terrace west of the preesnt confluence of the slough and river was an intensively occupied area that produced shell-tempered pottery and bone and shell refuse. On the upstream or east end of this terrace above the right bank of the slough a shellmidden was reported by Mr. West.
