Souvenirs pieux évoque les ancêtres maternels de l'auteur et entame la fesque familiale qui sera poursuivie avec Archives du Nord puis Quoi L'Eternité. L'ouvrage qui doit son titre aux images religieuses traditionnellement envoyées à l'occasion d'un décès livre une narration chronologique depuis « l'accouchement » puis « la tournée des châteaux » « Deux Voyageurs en route vers la région immuable » jusqu'à la dernière section « Fernande » qui raconte l'enfance et la jeunesse de sa mère et son mariage avec Michel-Charles de Crayencour un veuf d'une cinquantaine d'années qui sera bientôt le père de Marguerite Yourcenar. Le texte avait paru l'année précédente aux éditions Alphée à Monaco. Bel envoi à Maurice Genevoix alors secrétaire perpétuel de l'Académie française qu'elle rejoindra le 6 mars 1980 ce qui constituera un tournant historique : jamais encore une femme n'avait été reçue sous la Coupole. Mais Yourcenar fut avant cela élue à l'Académie royale de Langue et de Littérature françaises de Belgique reçue le 27 mars 1971. Maurice Genevoix y est présent : le secrétaire perpétuel de l'Académie française est venu rendre le prix Habif Grand prix de littérature française hors de France à la canadienne Anne Hébert et c'est là l'occasion de leur première rencontre remémorée ici à Genevoix. Ce dernier la célèbrera deux ans plus tard lorsqu'elle obtiendra le grand prix de littérature de l'Académie française pour l'ensemble de son oeuvre. Et trois ans plus tard Jean d'Ormesson s'adresse officiellement à Yourcenar pour lui proposer de rejoindre les 40. Elle lui répond le 22 octobre 1979 : « . du moment que je ne suis pas obligée de faire acte de candidature ce à quoi je répugne instinctivement et d'autant plus que ma qualité de femme rend en quelque sorte cette démarche plus voyante encore et du moment que je ne suis pas non plus obligée à une résidence fixe à Paris même pour une partie de l'année rien certes ne me ferait refuser l'honneur que vous souhaitez si généreusement pour moi.
