Roman longtemps mûri commencé dès 1956 et précédé de plusieurs prépublications en revue entre 1964 et 1965 L'Œuvre au noir marque l'un des sommets de l'oeuvre de Marguerite Yourcenar. L'ouvrage met en scène Zénon médecin philosophe alchimiste et libre penseur dans la Flandre du XVIe siècle exposé aux violences religieuses aux illusions du savoir et à l'expérience du corps souffrant. Prix Femina décerné au premier tout et à l'unanimité L'OEuvre au noir connaît un grand succès public dès l'année de sa parution. L'article du Monde à parution soulignait sous la plume de José Cabanis la manière très singulière de renouveler le roman historique par un « rigoureux esprit scientifique » et par une capacité rare à faire sentir à travers la Renaissance les analogies profondes avec les inquiétudes contemporaines. L'envoi laisse deviner une relation ancienne : sans qu'il soit possible en l'état d'affirmer document contre document que Marguerite Yourcenar et Babette se connaissaient avant la guerre la formule suggère des attaches anciennes. L'hypothèse n'a rien d'invraisemblable : Babette Wills alors Elisabeth Ullman vivait dans le Paris artistique des années 1930 auprès du peintre Paul Ullman avant que la guerre ne contraigne le couple à gagner les États-Unis en 1940 où ils se fixèrent dans le Connecticut. Yourcenar installée elle aussi en Amérique à l'approche du conflit vécut ces mêmes années dans le Connecticut avec Grace Frick avant de trouver plus tard son port d'attache dans le Maine. Veuve de Paul Ullman - tué en France en 1944 alors qu'il était en mission pour l'Office of Strategic Services - Elisabeth épousera Michaël Wills en 1945 ; c'est après ce second mariage qu'elle s'installera en Californie dans la maison Willy Nilly à Portola Valley qui deviendra un lieu de rencontre important des écrivains et intellectuels de la côte Ouest. Yourcenar reports about the tragically declining health of her last lover and travel companion Jerry Wilson the young American gay photographer. They were in India on a trip to Nepal when Jerry “fall dangerously ill around Jan. 25 from what we thought was malaria†but a doctor in India diagnosed “that it had to do with lungsâ€. “Jerry thought that a stay at the sea-shore at Goa would help him†so the two stayed there for about 2 month and arrived back to New York in mid March. “Since than an advanced tuberculosis of both lungs has been diagnosedâ€. Yourcenar mentions that Jerry undergoes a “strong chemical treatment which makes him awfully weak†and writes that she won’t “give his ‘phone no since he is so tired that he begged me not to give it to anyoneâ€. She provides Jerry’s mother’s address to send letter to him through her. Yourcenar closes her letter with good wishes to Bernard and Jimmy Baldwin who she hopes “is full of energy as usualâ€. Jerry Wilson died of AIDS on February 8 1986 in Paris at the age of 37.<br /> <br /> Marguerite Yourcenar 1903–1987 was a Belgian-born French author who was the first women elected to the Académie française in 1980. Bernard Hassell 1930–1991 was an American actor and dancer James Baldwin’s 1924–1987 companion. Baldwin was an African American gay writer and civil rights activist. He and Yourcenar were good friends and in 1982 Yourcenar translated his play “The Amen Corner†into French. unknown
