The cream of Chinese poetry A mid- to late-Qing dynasty printing of this poetry collection prepared on the orders of the Qianlong emperor including works by Du Fu and Li Bai the unsurpassed masters of Chinese poetry's golden age as well as Bai Juyi Han Yu Lu You and Su Shi. Within a few hundred years of their deaths Du and Li were already considered China's greatest poets. Du's deep and emotive poems were inspired by his personal experiences and the momentous events of his day including the 755 An Lushan Rebellion. "In Chinese culture his works have been virtually canonized because as the expression of the Chinese mind and moral being in their highest form their supremacy in literature has been placed beyond merely literary considerations. In the literary matters of innovative technique and the establishment of many new subgenres Du Fu is also seen as without peer" Chou p. 1. Li Bai's poems were heavily influenced by his free and eremitic lifestyle. They often took the form of dreams or spirit-journeys exploring themes such as reclusion friendship the beauty of nature and the effects of drunkenness. "The infectious rhythm of much of his poetry makes his lines memorable and the vividness of pictures he paints in words brings to life the scenes and places he describes" Brown p. 542. Completed in 1750 the compilation was overseen by Liang Shizheng 1697-1767 the emperor's trusted cultural advisor and printed the following year. A second edition from new woodblocks was issued in Jiangsu a decade later with imperial permission and this set is likely printed from those re-cut blocks. Forty-seven parts in 25 vols octavo 275 x 175 mm. Woodblock-printed text in Chinese. Later brown wrappers xianzhuang stitching ink manuscript titles on front covers. Housed in four later blue cloth folding cases bone toggles. Old tidemarks in some vols couple of closed tears including 160 mm tear on part 15 f. 5 old residual mould staining in parts 24 37-40 and 44-45 other occasional marks a few small repaired losses; cases with staining and worming on lining: a very good set. Like The Poetical Tell-Tale this collection of bawdy verse presents its items in random order for fitful reading modeling a use for literature increasingly deplored by the literary establishment." Spine also has a burgundy lettering piece the date 1787 and rules in gilt. The binding is worn and rubbed. Front hinge is cracked and the rear hinge is starting. Removed bookplate from the front pastedown but an early simple paper bookplate bears the name "Robert Y. Hayne" and the title page has the signature of "Robt. Y. Hayne." The text of the book is toned and the text block is sound. Robert Young Hayne 1791-1839 was Governor of South Carolina 1832-1834 and was Mayor of Charleston 1836-1837. He was an ardent States Rights supporter. He died in Asheville North Carolina. This volume is notable for the inclusion of an early printing of the United States Constitution page 100 of the second section. This volume also includes George Washington's "Plan of a new Constitution of the United States of America agreed upon at a Convention held at New York." There is also "Dr. Ruston's Letter to Dr. Franklin on the Cure of Smoky Chimneys From Dr. Franklin's Philosophical and Miscellaneous Papers." Page 147 has the "History of Virginian Mountains. Large 8vo pp. 7 1 blank; decorative border to p. 2 woodcut head and tailpieces; ink blot to foot of second leaf but otherwise clean and crisp throughout; in contemporary Italian decorative wrappers.</p><p>Lovely copies both in Italian block-printed paper wrappers of these two poems printed for the marriage of Heinrich XLII 1672-1818 and Caroline Henriette of Hohenloe-Kirchberg 1761-1849 which took place at Kirchberg in Thuringia on June 10th 1779. </p><p>Both take the form of brief cantatas with the first consisting of a short air followed by a longer recitative and a duet and concluding with a further recitative and a chorus "Fromme Wünsche bringen wir für die Neuvermählten"; this was according to the title-page to be performed at the Musik-Collegium in Kirchberg although neither the librettist nor the composer is named. The second similarly anonymous is divided into sections on joy married love and hope interspersed with interventions from 'Der Kirchbergische Genius' and concluding with alternating duets and chorus sections the latter to be performed by children of both sexes. Both are printed in Schwäbisch Hall.</p><p>The alert may be surprised at Heinrich's regnal number; the house of Reuss of which he was a member had a convention that rather than giving sons different names they would all be called Heinrich and numbered whether or not they had any expectation of becoming the head of the house.</p><p>Neither work recorded by OCLC or VD18.</p> Johann Christophe Messerer

When other women were publishing anonymously or under a pseudonym Marinella's name was on most of her books and she was known by all Venice as the author of the rest. She apparently used the feminine form of her last name; some editors have used the family form "Marinelli." Lucrezia was the daughter of a Venetian physician who wrote works on medicine two on women's health and on philosophy. We know nothing of her mother nor of when her father died do we know that he was dead by 1600. Someone saw to it that Lucrezia was given an education that included philosophy and classical as well as vernacular literature. At some point she married a physician Girolamo Vacca and had at least two children a son and daughter. When Marinella was 24 years old her first work was published La colomba sacra poema eroico The holy dove a heroic poem a biographical epic in ottava rima on an early Christian martyr. Her next publication was the Nobilta et l'eccellenza delle donne co' difetti et mancamenti degli uomoni The nobility and excellences of women and the defects and vices of men printed in 1600 and enlarged in 1601. Between 1603 and 1606 six more works were published although some appear to have been written earlier: a heroic poem and a prose work on Mary; poems on Francis of Assisi and on Justina another early Christian martyr; a collection of Marinella's sonnets and madrigals and a pastoral verse novel Arcadia felice. After 1606 there is a gap of 12 years before her next publications --- an allegory based on the story of Cupid and Psyche and a poetic biography of Catherine of Siena --- and then another 11 years before she published in 1635 what historians of Italian literature consider her masterpiece L'Enrico overo Bisantio conquistato Henry or Byzantium gained. We don't know the connection between these gaps and her life as a wife and mother. By the 1590s the Roman influence that we call "Baroque" had come to Venice. It grew in part out of the Catholic Church's need to reach out to people to instruct and to arouse them more directly than it had done before. For literature the result was an emphasis on vernacular writing with a strong emotional appeal. All of Marinella's writing reflects the Baroque but in different ways and from a feminine perspective. She usually wrote in the heroic verse form but sometimes in a combination of verse and the "poetic prose" that she saw as capable of the same elevation as poetry. Many of Marinella's books were lives of religious figures but almost always about women and then always with the emphasis on their heroism rather than on more passive virtues. She wrote of the heroic resistance of the women Columba and Justina; her book on Catherine of Siena was on the "heroic deeds and marvelous life"; her life of Mary apparently the most successful during her lifetime was on Mary as "empress of the universe"; in a later edition of her early poem on Francis Clare of Assisi's "glorious passion" receives equal billing. Her secular writing also fused the extravagance of the popular chivalric tales and heroic epics with a Christian but feminine view of morality. One satirically allegorizes the myth of Cupid and Psyche as a conflict between body and soul; another is a pastoral verse drama that makes fun of human love. L'Enrico overo Bisantio conquistato is an epic in the style of Torquato Tasso's La Gerusalemme liberata but with stronger more self-reliant women. To date the only work of Marinella's that has been translated into English is part of her Nobilta et l'eccellenza delle donne. It differs from her other writings in being a polemical treatise a genre in which extravagant statement and personal attack were acceptable. Forty-five years later Marinella would write Essortationi alle donne et a gli altri Exhortations to women and others in which she would qualify some of the more extreme views expressed in Nobilta. But in 1600 Marinella would say whatever she needed to say in order to refute the misogynist statements of earlier writers particularly the treatise of Giuseppe Passi who had published Dei donneschi defetti The defects of women in 1599. Although it differs in purpose from her other works Nobilta shares with them Marinella's Baroque qualities of intensity extravagant rhetoric and emotional appeal; it also shares their confidence in a woman's ability. Modern scholarship has placed Brown among the contributors of anonymous poems specifically as the author of "Utrum Horum Mavis Elige" on pages 222-224. This edition is based on Lenglet Dufresnoys 1735 edition. The "Roman de la Rose" was one of the most important Medieval French poems. The work is divided into two sections. The first written by Guillaume de Lorris in the early to mid 13th century is an allegorical dream addressing the Art of Love. The second written in the late 13th or early 14th century by Jean de Meung continues the poem in a different vein turning the work into a satire and a commentary on contemporary society. The poem contains long digressions in which an encyclopedic mass of information on various topics is set forth including "satires on women attacks on the magistrates the hereditary nobility and the mendicant friars disquisitions on the origin of society and of royal power on property pauperism and marriage on the relations of nature and art on hallucinations and sorcery and on the physical sciences." Oxford Comp. to French Lit p. 630. Over time great interest has been attached to the allegorical meaning of the poem which is open to diverse interpretations. The work contains much alchemical symbolism. Brown hardback leather cover. 260mm x 210mm 10" x 8". xl 336pp. Woodcut head and tail pieces. Stephen Duck 1705-1756 was born and lived at Charlton Wiltshire. He wrote poems on several subjects most well-known was 'The Threshers Labour' which was publicly read to the Queen by the Earl of Macclesfield. Also 'Truth and Falsehood' and 'A Fable'. The poems are representative of 18th-century working-class poetry a genre that they essentially began. There are stylistic conventions and modifications in his poems but also modest truths about laboring people. Duck was given a small house and various minor court appointments by the Queen; he became a yeoman of the guard then a Keeper of the Queen's Library and eventually took holy orders. Two volumes. <br/> Appealing contemporary polished calf covers with blind-ruled borders and floral tooling along the joint raised bands gilt volume numbers. With an engraved allegorical frontispiece to volume I. Title page of volume I printed in red and black. Front endleaves with ink ownership inscription "Chas. Chichester His Book 1741." ◆Three small slightly discolored areas on boards two short worm tracks to one board a couple of tiny abrasions to another but the binding tight and lustrous. A hint of offsetting from frontispiece otherwise AN ESPECIALLY FINE COPY INTERNALLY clean crisp bright and in as close to original condition as one could hope to find.<br/> <br/> This little set is of special interest because of its astonishing condition. These two volumes contain a series of lectures on poetry given at Oxford by Joseph Trapp 1679-1747. The lectures are in Latin and his illustrations are taken largely from Latin poets although he also discusses Greek poetry and occasionally a phrase is given in Greek using a Greek font. His presentation is divided into such categories as tragic lyric epigrammatic and so forth and there is a lecture "On the Concept of Beauty; or Elegance and Sublimity." An Oxford graduate Trapp was that university's first professor of poetry; he was also an Anglican clergyman who wrote poetry himself. In addition he was a polemicist for the Tory cause and the Puritan rebellion which broke out at the end of his life filled him with horror. The pupil who owned these books was apparently markedly dilatory or even a dropout because the volumes have clearly experienced no use and remain much as they were on the day of their issue.
