Each is one of only 26 lettered and SIGNED copies. Our set is letter Y. Total edition sizes ranged from 300 copies at the beginning of the series in 1994 to 750 copies when the series ended in 2006. Each broadside appears on a single sheet folded to create 8 panels. 8 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches 215 x 90 mm when folded. The series contains a remarkable collection of writers including established poets such as Amiri Baraka Robert Creeley Jerome Rothenberg Anne Waldman Alice Notley Diane Di Prima Dick Higgins Jackson Mac Low Joanne Kyger Jack Hirschman Carl Rakosi Aram Saroyan Anselm Hollo and many others. But it's not just big names. There are many emerging or lesser-known poets as well. Please inquire for a complete list.Sylvester Pollet 1939-2007 was the mastermind behind this series. He was an associate editor of the National Poetry Foundation and taught creative writing at the University of Maine Orono. According to the previous owner of this set "He Pollet published work under the Backwoods Broadsides imprint for many years but the chaplet series was his 'heart' project." Included with the set is Pollet's "farewell" letter to subscribers ending the series in 2006. OCLC FirstSearch shows numerous institutional holdings of individual broadsides presumably unsigned copies. But as far as we can determine only the University of Wisconsin has a complete set of the series. There were no other sets in commerce as of March 14 2019. A wonderful association between two Surrealists. <br /><br />This alphabet book written entirely in French features short poems or phrases following each letter of the alphabet. Paul Éluard has written a preface while the frontispiece collage is by Mesens himself. One of 500 numbered copies printed on Featherweight vélin following 3 copies on Japon nacré and 13 on Hollande van Gelder. Mesens founded the publisher Éditions Nicolas Flamel and named it after the medieval scribe and manuscript seller. <br /><br />"There can be no doubt that <i>Alphabet sourd aveugle</i> is the key work in Mesens's literary oeuvre" writes Erich Weiss. "It took Mesens only two days to compose the twenty-six poems of his alphabet during a story stay at the Edith Cavell Hospital in Ukkel in August 1930." This book is in Very Good to Near Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The text pages are mostly clean and bright. The endpapers have noticeable toning as does the title page. This copy has been signed by William Everson as William Everson dated 1944 with an inscription and signed again in 1962 as Brother Antoninus. This is the author's third book of poetry and is quite scarce. From Wikipedia: "Everson was an influential member of the San Francisco Renaissance in poetry and worked closely with Kenneth Rexroth during this period of his life. Throughout his life Everson was a devotee of the work and lifestyle of poet Robinson Jeffers. Much of his work as a critic was done on Jeffers's poetry. Everson registered as an anarchist and a pacifist with his draft board in compliance with the 1940 draft bill. Lelle was a Virginia-based computer scientist the included note mentions popular 70s computer systems KRONOS and SCOPE and these amateur poems show an uncommonly early influence of code and programming. As such they read at times not unlike proto-L=A=N-G=U=A=G=E verse by way of concrete poetry. Titles like "Vector Space" "Debug" "Big Bang Theory" "Matrix Cross Product "Null Space" and "Binary Gulch" show the clear influence of science while others "Paperclip Consciousness" "Cubicle Truth" allude to office-work and even the counterculture "The Redneck and the Hippie". Throughout the voice is an original one an unusual confluence of logic earnestness and experimentation. His thought united people of African descent and Africa across the globe to encourage pride in their diverse black folk culture and black aesthetic. Hughes was one of the few prominent black writers to champion racial consciousness as a source of inspiration for black artists. His African-American race consciousness and cultural nationalism would influence many foreign black writers including Jacques Roumain Nicolás GuillénLéopold Sédar Senghor and Aimé Césaire. Along with the works of Senghor Césaire and other French-speaking writers of Africa and of African descent from the Caribbean such as René Maran fromMartinique and Léon Damas from French Guiana in South America the works of Hughes helped to inspire the Négritude movement in France. Auden was sent out by Scientific American Magazine as a holiday greeting in 1969. In mustard wrappers with red lettering it has illustrations by 6 different illustrators. It was written after Updike read the single topic Sept. 1967 Scientific American devoted to "Materials". Folio 14 inches / 35.7 cm 4 unnumbered leaves in stapled printed wrappers featuring a beautiful cover illustration by George Schneeman who often collaborated with New York School poets. Pages lightly toned some soiling to the covers half-inch tear and some rippling to the rear cover page. A Very Good copy. OCLC WorldCat lists 21 institutional holdings of this edition. Corinth reprinted Giant Night in 1970; that edition is readily obtainable. This true first edition though is very scarce to the market especially in acceptable collectible condition.
