Small 8vo original sheep red leather label gilt lettering 219 1 pages. An eccentric book-length poem from Elder Joseph Thomas 1791-1835 the wide-ranging charismatic North Carolina itinerant preacher known as the White Pilgrim for his habit of attiring himself in white apparel in all seasons and climes. Thomas includes a fairly lengthy and graphic section here leveled against slavery and its e suggesting those who endorse slavery might "Let them be bound and torn away / From wives and friends to Africa. / Let them be starv'd and beat one year / Then say 'tis right I'll say 'tis queer; / Or whip their wives before their eye-- / Is that all right O no they cry." Thomas also suggests abstaining from the product of slave labor "In sugar works where Negroes toil / A leg and arm they often boil; / They grind them up and mix the sweet / Of all that luxury we eat. / O temp'rate man use not that food / That's stain'd or mix'd with negro blood! / That taste luxur'ous now forego / Which causes human gore to flow." Bound in full crushed green morocco five raised bands gilt lettering spine and front cover front cover image of two trees with initials CR bottom of left tree moire silk end papers top edge gilt. Period bookplate of Charles Ernest Green front pastedown. Gift inscription pasted on card stock front flyleaf reads: " Christmas Greetings to C.E.G. This binding is by Clara Rice and is a fine sample of her work. The book has been on exhibition at the Arts & Crafts Guild. R.J.D.". No Date to inscription circa 1903. The San Francisco Call newspaper shows an article dated Dec. 12. 1903 tha is titled "Guild of Arts & Crafts opens Unique exhibition" and further states "Miss Clara Rice Secretary. Her mosaic leather work in book-binding is much admired". And the Bulletin of the Dept. of Labor Vol. 9 issues 54-56 shows " Guild of Arts & Crafts of California Miss Clara Rice Secretary 639 Kearney St. San Francisco". Very Good front cover and spine uniformly lighter than rear cover top corner front cover small bump. Originally started in 1894 the first run of the Guild of Arts & Crafts in San Francisco lasted until some time in 1897. Douglas van Denburgh launched the second Guild of Arts & Crafts in San Francisco in 1903 and that group lasted at least through 1910. And the poet Edward Rowland Sill was principal of Oakland High School California and professor of English literature at the University of California during the period 1874 - 1882. He died at the age of 46 in 1887 a minor American poet of high quality who but for his early death may have gained a higher place. A collection of 26 poems by the Sacramento poet 1936-2016. It contains a short introduction by the author in which she says "I write from experiences that have taken place that I wish had taken place and that I imagined too place." <br /><br />She explains the meaning of "ten ring" in the title: it's the highest possible score one can achieve on a shooting range. And even though she has never shot a gun the idea behind the expression "merges with my desire to hit that ten ring as close as I can in the exactness of the poem's meaning." Black ribbon attached inside the box. <br /><br /><b>SIGNED</b> by Jack Hirschman on the title leaf. A limited edition of only 30 boxed sets featuring facsimiles of poetry broadsides produced in 1979 by Hirschman and the Union of Street Poets in San Francisco. Hirschman wrote many of the poems but he also translated the works of others such as Vladimir Mayakovsky. As he explains in a two-page introduction Hirschman artist Kristen Wetterhahn and poet Jack Mueller d. 2017 formed the Union of Street Poets in December 1978. The group made photocopies of poems in editions of 100 copies which they gave to fellow poets and artists as well as the general public. This edition reproduces 23 of the broadsides on multicolored paper most with striking art work by Wetterhahn.<br /><br />A typically beautiful production by Soheyl Dahi and his Sore Dove Press known for high-quality limited editions of works by poets and artists.<br /><br />OCLC lists seven institutional holdings: SUNY at Buffalo San Jose State Berkeley Colorado Yale Delaware and Texas. With a drawing of an angel by Ferlinghetti on the cover sheet.<br /><br />This edition should not be confused with other Ferlinghetti books that have "Endless Life" in the title such as those issued by New Directions.
