Interestingly the block cutter Asakura Konpachi æœå€‰ä»Šå…« is credited but no one else. The date comes from the preface. There is no colophon. Probably privately printed. In lovely shape and very good printing. An excellent example of the genre. unknown

Finely bound in full dark green crushed morocco stamp signed "Bound by Zaehnsdorf" the covers with central gilt stamped wreaths and a single red rose at each corner the back with five raised bands with a single gilt rose in each compartment all edges gilt wide inner dentelles stamped with gilt flowers marbled end papers and bearing the Zaehnsdorf gilt exhibition stamp at bottom rear dentelle indicating this book was featured in a fine binding exhibition in the 1890s. Very Good Plus the back uniformly sunned to brown light wear at top edges of hinges and spine light rubbing at the corners. Lovely and elegant in its simplicity. The book covers have bumping rubbing and wear to the spine ends and corners. The bottom front end front foredge and spine joints have rubbing wear and some light biopredation. There are several spots of ground-in dirt and discoloration to the front cover by the title. The text pages are generally clean but noticeably toned and with spots of foxing. The front endpaper has been removed by a former owner. There is a previous owner's address label on the front pastedown page. The rear endpaper has a small edge tear. "As teenagers Leila Curtis and her sister Mary became fascinated with the process of copper engraving. Both parents having a background in engraving encouraged their daughters’ interest. Soon the sisters opened an engraving shop in the carriage house of their San Francisco home at 1117 Pine Street. Mary became the draughtsman i. E. the artist and Leila the block-cutter. That endeavor led to a shop downtown and eventually a partnership called Crane and Curtis 1871. Mary withdrew from the business when she married Thomas Richardson in 1869. Her life’s work became painting; the Richardson house became a mecca for artists and writers." from Found SF website "Mrs. Agnes B Peterson was one such woman who arrived in 1868. Upon being rebuffed by the Union she raised the capital to open her own printing office and establish the Women’s Co-operative Printing Union WCPU the first permanent foothold for woman printers in San Francisco. The times had already started changing with women becoming a significant part of San Francisco life. Other organizations helping women had been established that same year: the confusingly similar sounding Women’s Co-operative Union to provide employment for women in various fields and the California Labor Exchange to help both men and women find work. Illustrated with a tissue-guarded photo-intaglio frontispiece portrait of Whitman by Herbert H. Gilchrist and 7 other inserted plates as called for. Three of them were drawn by Joseph Pennell. According to Whitman bibliographer Joel Myerson: "Whitman helped to write and to edit this book." In BAL vol. 9 Michael Winship says Whitman contributed the account of his birthplace antecedents on the first 24 pages and revised the text of pages 154-236. BAL printing 2 without mention of G. P. Putnam as publisher of MAN'S MORAL NATURE on page 240. Binding B no sequence established with front and rear covers each blindstamped with a triple rule frame and spine imprint: "David McKay."
