An ephemeris plural: ephemerides; from the Greek word ἐφήμερος ephemeros ìdailyî is a table of values that gives the positions of astronomical objects in the sky at a given time or times. Different kinds of ephemerides are used for astronomy and astrology. Even though this was also one of the first applications of mechanical computers an ephemeris will still often be a simple printed table. Contents in this copy include a Calendar with gold numbers a Sun cycle and Age of the Moon and dates for important liturgical holidays among them Ash Wednesday Easter and Pentecost. Rare first edition of the "Zeeland Nightingale" perhaps the most intriguing Dutch songbook of the early 17th century both from the literary point of view as from the point of view of book illustration and printing. The work was intended to spread the glory of the province of Zeeland and includes contributions of 18 poets born or living in Zeeland. Produced by the literal society of Middelburg it showcases the cultural identity of Zeeland through love lyrics devotional poetry and moral verse. The work continued to inspire for many centuries as the present copy was owned by the English explorer Frank Linsley James 1851-1890 and the Frysian art collector and notary Nanne Ottema 1874-1955.The nightingale was a symbol for talented poets and this work was to show the world that Zeeland was the place to be for modern artists. The initiator was most likely Jacob Cats. Contributions came from Cats himself Anna Roemer Visscher Philibert van Borssele Adriaen Valerius Johannis de Bruyne and many others. Adriaen van de Venne contributed a love song Zeeusche Mey-clacht accompanied by a beautiful illustration of a well-dressed young man leaning over a stream and mirroring himself in the water engraved by W. de Passe. At the end to promote sales a newly finished work by Adriaen van de Venne the brother of the publisher was added Tafereel van Sinne-Mal. In this work is found the beautiful engraving of the "Middelburgsche Lauwerhof" the fine garden at the back of his brother's printing office and in the accompanying song all things sold at his brother's bookshop are listed such as maps and prints paintings and lacquered ware compasses and nautical instruments watches etc. Other fine and interesting plates are the mussel-seller and the knife-grinder especially dedicated to Magdalena de Passe.From the early days the province of Zeeland represented within the new Dutch Republic a cultural centre of its own. At the time the most popular and respected Dutch poet Jacob Cats resided in Zeeland and declared himself very satisfied with his Middelburg printer. Afterwards Huygens had some of his works printed at Zeeland then Anna Roemer Visscher came to visit and exchanged poems with the Zeeland poets. Cats' brilliant illustrator Adriaen van de Venne also moved to Middelburg. His brother Jan Pietersz van de Venne had already established a flourishing business there as publisher and bookseller allowing the Zeeland intellectuals poets and artists to meet. With the bookplate of explorer Frank Linsley James 1851-1890 and the manuscript ownership annotation of Rev. Henry White of Lichfield dates unknown dated 1819 on the front pastedown the ex libris stamp of Nanne Ottema 1874-1955 on the second flyleaf. The vellum is slightly soiled. The leaves are lightly browned occassionally slightly foxed in the margins the lower corner of the last 2 pages has been restored. Very Good Plus the back uniformly sunned to brown light wear at top edges of hinges and spine light rubbing at the corners. Lovely and elegant in its simplicity. The cream of Chinese poetry A mid- to late-Qing dynasty printing of this poetry collection prepared on the orders of the Qianlong emperor including works by Du Fu and Li Bai the unsurpassed masters of Chinese poetry's golden age as well as Bai Juyi Han Yu Lu You and Su Shi. Within a few hundred years of their deaths Du and Li were already considered China's greatest poets. Du's deep and emotive poems were inspired by his personal experiences and the momentous events of his day including the 755 An Lushan Rebellion. "In Chinese culture his works have been virtually canonized because as the expression of the Chinese mind and moral being in their highest form their supremacy in literature has been placed beyond merely literary considerations. In the literary matters of innovative technique and the establishment of many new subgenres Du Fu is also seen as without peer" Chou p. 1. Li Bai's poems were heavily influenced by his free and eremitic lifestyle. They often took the form of dreams or spirit-journeys exploring themes such as reclusion friendship the beauty of nature and the effects of drunkenness. "The infectious rhythm of much of his poetry makes his lines memorable and the vividness of pictures he paints in words brings to life the scenes and places he describes" Brown p. 542. Completed in 1750 the compilation was overseen by Liang Shizheng 1697-1767 the emperor's trusted cultural advisor and printed the following year. A second edition from new woodblocks was issued in Jiangsu a decade later with imperial permission and this set is likely printed from those re-cut blocks. Forty-seven parts in 25 vols octavo 275 x 175 mm. Woodblock-printed text in Chinese. Later brown wrappers xianzhuang stitching ink manuscript titles on front covers. Housed in four later blue cloth folding cases bone toggles. Old tidemarks in some vols couple of closed tears including 160 mm tear on part 15 f. 5 old residual mould staining in parts 24 37-40 and 44-45 other occasional marks a few small repaired losses; cases with staining and worming on lining: a very good set.
