FIRST EDITION OF EACH VOLUME THE FIRST VOLUME IS SIGNED AND INSCRIBED FOR ABBOTT THE NOTED GRAVES SCHOLAR AND COLLEAGUE. These two books Graves' best known works became massively popular when first published in 1934 and gained literary recognition with the award of the 1934 James Tait Black Prize for literature and fiction. Overall a very good bright set. Finely bound in recent full black morocco. Spines with five raised bands the compartments ruled decorated and lettered in gilt. Single gilt ruled borders on boards. Top edges gilt. A fine pair. ----- Largely works of fiction they are written in the form of an autobiography of the Roman Emperor Claudius and tell the history of the Julio-Claudian dynasty and the early years of the Roman Empire from Julius Caesar's assassination in 44 BC Caligula's assassination in AD 41 and through to Claudius' accession and ultimately to his death in AD 54. Though the narrative is largely fictionalised most of the events depicted are drawn from historical accounts of the same time period by the Roman historians Suetonius and Tacitus. It is described as a post-catastrophic comedy following the writer Cecil Tompion as his son and daughter both veterans of the First World War try to break free of his controlling and bullying grip. The play deals with homosexuality gender politics generational conflict and more. Robert Graves is best known for his memoir 'Good-Bye to All That' which is about his experience fighting in World War One. NOT price-clipped. The book was not produced to high standards and is typically not found so well preserved as this copy. Neither the book nor jacket exhibit any wear or even evidence of use. There is no fading to the bright blue and yellow of the jacket. There is a touch of age spotting to the edges or rear panel of the jacket. A beautiful copy. FIRST EDITION IN EXCELLENT CONDITION of this collection of 36 stories by the eternally popular English poet/scholar/translator/writer/Classicalist and novelist. Many of these stories were gathered from Punch to which Mr. Graves had been contributing. The title is taken from a Majorcan term meaning to fall off a ladder or damage one’s reputation.
