18585935Florence: Barbèra Bianchi e Comp 1858. Collezione Diamante. Good/The canny Italian publisher Gaspero Barbèra made two brilliant moves practically simultaneously: he developed the vest-pocket 48mo format for Italian classics and he hired the still-beardless 20-year-old Giosuè Carducci to edit them. This edition of Vittorio Alfieri's neoclassical poems and satires was Carducci's first job his first published edition with Barbèra. Carducci's preface was characterized as "robust elegant and magisterial" in the 1904 annals of Barbèra's editions. Carducci is considered Italy's most significant poet of the unification period. According to Parenti there are two distinct printings with unique collations. The copy offered here has priority. 48mo 112 mm xvi 537 pages; engraved frontispiece portrait with tissue guard. Bound in contemporary green cloth titled in gilt on spine. A few gilt letters are tarnished. Endleaves discolored. Intermittent light scattered foxing. One page in ink in four 4-line stanzas on rrecto of a single sheet. 1 vols. 6-1/4 x 5-1/4 inches. Nobel Prize Winner's Holograph Poem. The influential poet and teacher Gosuè Carducci 1835-1907 was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1906; he was the frst Italian to receive that honor. His poem "Panteismo" first appeared in RIME NUOVE published in Bologna Zanichetti in 1889 and went through several editions before his death in 1907. The holograph version here on display represents a slightly different earlier state of the text than either that of the 1889 edition or the final lifetime edition of 1906. In particular the second line of the third stanza is significantly altered. A rarity in the market. unknown books
