Israel Cohen 1820-1875 was a prominent member of Baltimore's most prominent Jewish family. The nephew of Mendes Israel Cohen son of Benjamin I. Cohen 1797-1845 and husband of Rachael Cohen he spent his life in Baltimore. The 1850 Census lists him as "Security and Commodity Brokerage and Investment Companies." The 1860 Census as well as the 1870 Census lists him as stockbroker. He was also a Railroad Company director; Secretary Treasurer and patron of the Maryland Academy of Music; and patron of the Maryland Academy of Art. His father Benjamin I. Cohen was one of the foremost bankers of Baltimore a founder of the Baltimore Stock Board and an influential advocate of Jewish civil rights. unknown books

In 1840 his family moved to Philadelphia. There he attended Jefferson Medical College and the University of Pennsylvania from which he received his medical degree in 1860. During the Civil War he served as assistant surgeon with the 26th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and served in Hooker's Brigade defending Washington D.C. He later transferred to the Navy serving under Admiral DuPont in the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron as Acting Assistant Surgeon in the Navy. After the war he became a pioneer in throat diseases and the founder of laryngology. Through his efforts Solis-Cohen professionalized a field earlier perceived as quackery and his education became a model for the training of head and neck surgeons. In 1866 he was the first in the United States to provide regular lectures on laryngology at the Philadelphia School of Anatomy. In 1875 he married Miriam Binswanger with whom he had eight daughters and three sons. He was a founder of the Philadelphia Polyclinic which would become the Graduate Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania and was its first professor of throat and chest diseases. Solis-Cohen also helped found the American Laryngologic Association and served as its president from 1880 to 1882. In 1892 he was the first surgeon in the United States to perform a complete laryngectomy successfully.Henry M. Richards1837-1873 was born in Mobile Alabama. Hill relies on petroglyphs and other evidence to argue that the Native Americans are descended from the Jews. Hill here joins the queue of those who had made similar arguments; Rafinesque makes an explicit connection in the columns of his Atlantic Journal Autumn 1832 between Hill and his Antiquities Explained and the recently published Book of Mormon: "This opinion based upon some religious prejudices and slight acquaintance with philology and antiquities has been entertained by Penn Adair Boudinot and several other superficial writers among which Ira Hill author of a late work Antiquities of America Explained. Hagerstown Maryland 1831. It is to me astonishing how in this enlightened age any such unfounded belief can be sustained; if greater absurdities still did not prevail as yet among a few. Two recent instances of egregious folly based upon this singular tenet have induced me to republish my letter of 1829 which if read by those laboring under this delusion cannot fail to shake their belief. A new Religion or sect has been founded upon this belief! the Mormonites thus called after a new Alcoran or Book of Mormon which is not a Jewish name. Supposed to be written in gold letters more than 2000 years ago by Mormon leader of the American Jews. This Book which no one has seen nor read but the founder of the sect the probable writer thereof has been made the Bible of a new sect. I have tried in vain to procure a copy of the translation wherein I could certainly detect a crowd of absurdities and incongruities. This piece first published in 1886 in his first book of poems Morning Star in Jerusalem. Then titled Tikvateinu; its very first version was written already in 1877 in Ia i Romania. It is this poem that soon became the lyrics of the Zionist anthem and later became the Israeli national anthem. Wiki. Light wear and soiling to wrappers contemporary ownership inscription on front cover. Lightly foxed. Second American edition after the first of 1822. The sixth part of Irving's catechism series issued in twelve total parts though the only one related to Judaism. The work is divided into three books describing the Civil State Ecclesiastical State and Domestic Condition. Subjects covered include the Twelve Tribes of Israel the Sabbath synagogues and other places of divine worship annual religious festivals marriage and other domestic matters etc. The whole text is couched in the past tense and seems to focus primarily on historical Israelites. The frontispiece depicts a Passover Seder in which the participants are clothed in historical robes. Relatively scarce. OCLC locates four copies of this second edition -- New York Public Library University of Pennsylvania Salem Academy in North Carolina and the University of Liverpool. "PAYABLE IN U.S. GOLD COIN" The letterhead describes the Company as "Importers of Clothing Domestics Rubber Boots Duck Etc." and gives its location as "14 and 16 Battery Street between Bush and Pine." A small fox mark at head of receipt otherwise Fine. Levi Strauss 1829-1902 a Jewish immigrant from Bavaria founded the iconic Levi Strauss & Company. He immigrated to New York in 1846 to join his two older brothers at their wholesale dry goods business. He moved to San Francisco in 1853 attracted by the Gold Rush. He established a wholesale business and was the west coast representative of the New York family business. He later renamed the company Levi Strauss & Co. Originally a dry goods business it became famous for its blue jeans. Levi's customer Jacob Davis a Nevada tailor invented a way to make pants with rivets at points of strain to extend their life. Levi partnered with Davis and they were granted a patent on May 20 1873 from which the now famous blue jeans were born. In addition to his clothing company Levi was a charter member and treasurer of the San Francisco Board of Trade; director of the Nevada Bank; director of the Liverpool London and Globe Insurance Company; director of the San Francisco Gas and Electric Company; and part owner of the Mission and Pacific Woolen Mills. In addition to his many business pursuits Levi was a philanthropist who contributed to the Pacific Hebrew Orphan Asylum and Home; the Eureka Benevolent Society and the Hebrew Board of Relief. "The Story of Levi Strauss" website of Levi Strauss & Co. Jewish brothers Adolph Cohn 1833-1906 and Simon Cohn 1834-1926 worked together as dry good merchants in Downieville California at the time of this receipt. Their business is cited as A. Cohn & Co. and also as S. & A. Cohn or Cohn Brothers. All are listed in the 1870 & 1880 U.S. Federal Censuses Adolph living with his wife Sarah 1849-1937 and Simon living with a roommate. Adolph Cohn was at one time secretary of the Mountain Torrent No. 2 Company of the Downieville Volunteer Fire Department a member of the Mountain Shade Lodge No. 18 of Free and Accepted Masons; and an officer with the Blue Range Encampment No. 8 Independent Order of Odd Fellows. "In 1867 a German-born Jewish photographer Theodore Lilienthal 1829-1894 advertised the city's post-Civil War recovery through photographs presented at the Paris Exposition as well as to Napoleon III. Lilienthal also promoted New Orleans to northern investors in 1873 through a book of photographs. Lilienthal considered one of New Orleans's most successful photographers later involved himself in spreading the truth about anti-Semitism in the photography field by offering to distribute for free an article criticizing that practice" Pollack Visual Art and the Urban Evolution of the New South Chapter 3. "Part of the first generation of photographers in New Orleans Theodore Lilienthal was the city's most successful nineteenth-century photographic entrepreneur. At the height of his commercial success from 1875 to 1885 he operated one of the largest studios in the South and was recognized as a pioneer of new photographic processes. New Orleans and particularly veterans of Hood's Texas Brigade created the "Hood Relief Committee." "Henry Russell 1812-1900 was an English pianist baritone singer and composer. Born into a distinguished Jewish family Russell was a great-nephew of Chief Rabbi Solomon Hirschell. The composer lived in the United States from 1835 to 1841 whereupon he returned to England and spent the remainder of his artistic career producing musical extravaganzas. The present song is one of many instances of collaboration between lyricist Charles Mackay and musical composer Henry Russell. Other songs of theirs are: "There's a Good Time Coming" "Cheer Boys Cheer" and "To the West." "Mordecai Manuel Noah 1785-1851 was one of the most important figures of his time. He was a person of many accomplishments: lawyer newspaper editor playwright diplomat politician judge and major activist for Jewish causes. Noah commanded the respect of four U. S. Presidents: Adams Madison Jefferson and Jackson. It has been said that to the Jews of his day he was the quintessential American and to Americans he was the representative Jew" Kestenbaum. 181825466Elaborate receipt for Newport Rhode Island sale of land from estate of Benjamin Seixas 1747-1817 signed by numerous members of his family and members of the Spanish-Portuguese Jewish Congregation who were heirs to the property known now as the Buliod-Perry House at 29 Touro Street to Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry the great naval hero of the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813. EARLY AMERICAN JUDAICA. NAPHTALI PHILLIPS.Manuscript Document Signed 1p folio 14Â½ x 21Â½ in. November 30 1818. This most important historic American Jewish document is signed by the following:Jachebed Seixas 1746-1828 wife of Moses Mendes Mendes.Naphtali Phillips 1773-1870. In 1796 Phillips took the first copy of George Washington's farewell address that came off the press of the American Advertiser a leading Philadelphia newspaper. In 1848 this document was placed in the cornerstone of the Washington Monument. On July 5 1797 Phillips married Rachel Hannah daughter of Moses Mendez Seixas a prominent Newport merchant and banker and a brother of Gershom Mendez Seixas known as "the patriotic Jewish minister of the American Revolution." Phillips was elected the first American born parnass of Mikveh Israel at the age of 25; he also helped to draft the new constitution of the synagogue. He soon returned to New York where he became parnasspresident of Shearith Israel the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue by 1816 and served for 14 terms. He was prominent in the affairs of the Democratic Party in New York City.Rachel Phillips 1798-1861 daughter of Benjamin M. Morris who has recorded the instrument of property transfer.Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry 1785-1819 was an American naval commander the older brother of Commodore Matthew C. Perry. Perry served in the West Indies during the Quasi War of 1798-1800 against France in the Mediterranean during the Barbary Wars of 1801-1815 and in the Caribbean fighting piracy and the slave trade; but he is most remembered for his heroic role in the War of 1812 during the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie. Supervising the building of a fleet at Erie Pennsylvania against the British he earned the title "Hero of Lake Erie" for leading the American forces in a decisive victory at the Battle of Lake Erie for which he received a gold medal from Congress. His leadership materially aided the successful outcomes of all nine Lake Erie military campaign victories and the victory was the turning point in the battle for the West in the War. His famous words "Don't Give Up the Ship" were emblazoned on his battle flag and his message to General William Henry Harrison; "We have met the enemy and they are oursâ€¦" are two of the most famous military quotes in American history.Perry bought the property at 29 Touro Street delineated in this document with the idea of eventually retiring there. Unfortunately in 1819 while commanding the frigate John Adams sailing for the Oronoco River in Venezuela in an attempt to once again discourage piracy in the Americas he contracted yellow fever and died on August 24th 1819 on his 34th birthday. His family continued to occupy the Newport property until 1865 when it became headquarters for a naval training ship aptly named the Oliver Hazard Perry. His body was brought back to Newport and he was buried in the Island Cemetery where his brother Matthew C. Northem of said Newport Merchant and Assignee of Benjamin Seixas of said Newport Gentleman in trust for the Creditors of the said Benjamin which said Rachel Judith Bilhah Abigail Grace Hetty and Benjamin are Children and Devisees of the said Moses Seixas; For and in Consideration of the sum of Four Thousand One hundred Dollars to us in hand well and truly paid before the unsealing and delivery hereof by OLIVER H. PERRY of said Newport Esquire the receipt whereof we do acknowledge have given granted bargained sold conveyed and confirmed and by these Presents do give grant bargain sell convey and confirm unto him the said OLIVER H. PERRY his Heirs and Assigns forever a certain Lot of Land situate in said Newport with the Dwellings house and other buildings thereon standing bounded North on Washington Square East on a gangway and on land of Asher Robbins: South on land late of Jonathan Marsh deceased and West on land late of Isaac Senter deceased being the same Estate on which the said Moses Seixas in his lifetime resided. To have and to hold the said granted Premises with the privileges and appertenances thereto belonging to him the said Oliver H. Perry his Heirs and Assigns forever.And the said Naphtali Phillips and Rachel Phillips Samuel Lopez and Judith Lopez Bilhah Seixas Abigail Seixas Grace Seixas and Hetty Seixas for ourselves our Heirs Executors and Administrators do hereby Covenant to and with the said Oliver H. Perry his Heirs and Assigns that at and before the enscaling and delivery hereof the said Rachel Judith Bilhah Abigail Grace and Hetty are lawfully seized and possessed of six individual seventh parts of the said granted and described Premises in their own Right as of an Estate of Inheritance fee simple in remander that We have good right full power and lawful authority to sell and convey the same to the said Oliver H. Perry to hold as aforesaid that We our Heirs Executors and Administrators shall and will forever Warrant and Defend the said six seventh parts of the said granted and described Premises to him the said Oliver H. Perry his Heirs and Assigns against the lawful claims and demands of all Persons.
