The first Haggadah of Passover published in America appeared in 1837 published in New York by S. H. Jackson with an English translation by David Levi of London. Henry Frank first issued a Haggadah based on Jackson's printing though not attributing the translation to Levi in 1850. 26053The seventeen bookplates dated between 1922 and 1925. Prague Czechoslovak Republic. Accomplished and attractive bookplates in an impressive range of styles from modernist to traditional several with mystical or masonic overtones produced using various printing processes. The bookplates range in size from 6.5 x 7 cm Herrmann’s own to 11.5 x 17.5 cm. Each is dated with Herrmann’s tiny monogram design adapted to suit its style of composition. The eighteen items are in very good condition each laid down on a 16 x 25 cm piece of textured grey card. In purpose-made worn brown card binding with triangular label on cover with manuscript lettering arranged in modernist design: ‘17 / EX / LIBRIS / VON / ROBERT HERRMANN’. Comparing the lettering of the label with Herrmann’s own bookplate within the collection the simplest depicting a vertical pencil within a circle indicates that the label was designed and executed by Herrmann himself. The seventeen bookplates from between 1922 and 1925 as follows: 6 from 1922 Hugo und Franzi Kornfeld; Dr Leo Kornfeld Viktor Polatschek Albert Porges Olga Stegel Mizi Steiner; 1 from 1923 Friedrich H. Neumann; 6 from 1924 Edith Hahn Robert Herrmann Willy Knepler Franz Nettel Franzi Pick Dr Josef Thimann; 4 from 1925 Anton Ditti Dr Hussein Erfan Margrit Kornfeld Marieluise Kornfeld. A number of the owners were Jewish see for example Nettel whose design features the star of David and some appear to have died in the Holocaust. The 7.5 x 10 cm black and white collotype photographic print appears to show a bas relief modernist design within a jagged border depicting a star shining over a cityscape into which two meteorites are falling. 1941List2962New York City 1941. Thirty-three sketches mainly measuring 6 x 8 or 8 x 10 inches affixed to black construction paper. Sketches are pen and ink or pencil some with captions. With seventeen typed pages mainly measuring 6 ½ x 7 inches. In an 11 x 14 ½ inch portfolio. Spine of portfolio missing all pages separated; sketches excellent construction paper with much marginal chipping; typed pages with adhesive verso else excellent. Overall very good to excellent. Bitia Rosendor 1920–2011 was a Jewish artist born in Jerusalem and raised in Antwerp Belgium. Rosendor studied painting and sculpture at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp but her studies were interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. The Rosendor family fled Europe via Portugal in 1941 and were detained at Ellis Island where these sketches were produced.<br /> <br /> The sketches include portraits of other detainees and immigration employees and views from the island. Most have captions including brief notes about the subjects such as “She became hysterical and was taken to the hospital†“A little orphan going all alone to the Dominican Republic†and “‘Liberty’ through barsâ€â€”the latter on an illustration of the Statue of Liberty seen through the bars on the internment center’s windows.<br /> <br /> The typed text describes Rosendor’s experience waiting for the family’s Visa to be approved. The ordeal is mostly one of boredom; she writes:<br /> <br /> “Everyone had the same endless day to pass but everyone passed it differently. There was no possible way to be original but each of us retained her or his personality. The emptiness of the hours was heavy to bear.â€<br /> <br /> The boredom though is punctuated by “incidentsâ€; some negative as when “Once a Chinese girl wept for three days uninterrupted refused to eat refused everything†and some positive as when “A friend seen last time at the Antipodes†disembarks “from a newly entered ship . and suddenly: ‘YOU’! -’YOU’â€.<br /> <br /> Rosendor would live with her family in Brooklyn until the 1950s when she returned to Europe with her husband Jewish-American painter Martin Reisberg a fellow immigrant whom she met in the city. The pair returned to Belgium where they ran a gallery and created exhibitions together until Rosendor’s death in 2011.<br /> <br /> Of interest to scholars of the Holocaust American immigration and the Jewish immigrant experience in the 1940s. unknown

Born into a distinguished Jewish family Russell was a great-nephew of Chief Rabbi Solomon Hirschell. The composer lived in the United States from 1835 to 1841 whereupon he returned to England and spent the remainder of his artistic career producing musical extravaganzas. The present song is one of many instances of collaboration between lyricist Charles Mackay and musical composer Henry Russell. Other songs of theirs are: "There's a Good Time Coming" "Cheer Boys Cheer" and "To the West." <br /> "Mordecai Manuel Noah 1785-1851 was one of the most important figures of his time. He was a person of many accomplishments: lawyer newspaper editor playwright diplomat politician judge and major activist for Jewish causes. Noah commanded the respect of four U. S. Presidents: Adams Madison Jefferson and Jackson. It has been said that to the Jews of his day he was the quintessential American and to Americans he was the representative Jew" Kestenbaum.<br /> Kestenbaum Auction May 2013. How poignant can something be Album is fairly Good worn with backstrip chipped and cover corners rounded; text is clean and binding is secure. He worked for First National Bank after high school then worked as a cashier and later president for twenty years of Charleston Savings Bank. He was the son of Louis Cohen 1833-1914 a Polish Jew who came to Charleston in 1850 and became a successful tailor and later the owner of a large and well-known clothing store in Florence. Marks & Sons for many years a business started by his father Moses Marks 1833-1911 a Russian Jew who came to the United States in 1850 settled in Charleston and became a successful merchant. Moses opened the large and very successful M. Marks & Sons in 1891 as a dry goods emporium and clothing business. The business ran until about 1930. Moses Marks' obituary says the business was "probably the first 5 and 10 cents store in the United States." "M. The Joint Distribution Committee was organized at the instance of U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Henry Morgenthau and Jacob Schiff to alleviate the suffering. They raised the necessary funds and turned their attention to the nine million Jews along the Eastern Front.
