194424192Halifax 1944-1945. Hardcover. Very good. 4to. Commercial ruled journal. Textured black leather boards heavily scuffed with tears and some loss to spine ends. Backstrip attached but fragile. All edges marbled. Handwriting in pen and some pencil to approximately one half of the pages; 67 closely written pages in total. Approx. 10000 words /-. Neat and meticulous handwritten daily journal written by a Halifax rabbi serving as chaplain for the Canadian armed forces: for one recorded service "42 soldiers present. 1 airman. Did not have chance to notify Air Force nor Navy re: Services." Beginning in September 1944 and ending in May 1945 the author records his public activities and services at the Robie St. Synagogue and elsewhere e.g.: served as cantor but unsatisfied with his own singing; only cake & coffee at the Purim social -- "Hamentaschen didn't arrive"; his advice and counsel to individual soldiers "Spoke to Major Lyons re Victor Morgan / promised to get him transferred so he can study Hebrew"; and the occasional purely personal note "Deanna Durbin is still tops." The journal's author names many officers and peers though not himself: "lunch with Greenspan" likely refers to Rabbi Abraham Greenspan of Halifax; the "Capt. Dr. Cass" who read the Torah "fairly well. He also blew the Shofar" is certainly Rabbi Samuel Cass. Visiting English evangelist Bryan Green gave a speech "under the auspices of Br. Ministery of Information. No revelation"; The rabbi records speeches and discussions -- sometimes heated -- on "Assimiliation" Jewish denominations Jewish education "How to Get Home for the High Holidays" as well as his trips to military camps and hospitals in Windsor and Debert advocacy for men A.W.O.L. or otherwise awaiting discipline or sentencing; distribution of books and pamphlets; and continual efforts to maintain and improve attendance at services. But not conspicuously the shadow under which these events took place and which certainly must have been on his mind. hardcover books

24458New York N.Y.: Not Published 1910. Group includes: Photography: C. 1915 6 ½" x 8 ¼" grammar school class photograph with very large flag back-drop. Evidence of the gradually changing demographic in New York City as black migration took place from the south and whites left for the suburbs. Edges chipped soiled; plate numbers at lower left; in good condition. Young Jewish man standing portrait; 6" x 9" overall size; H.Smith 109 Second Avenue N.Y. backstamp edges chipped a bit; in good condition. Group of well-dressed Jewish men in a meeting hall; some religious furnishings are visible candelabra lecturn cabinet. Approx. 7 ¼" x 9 ½" size; no photographer or studio identifiers. Group of 9 snapshots mounted on black paper album pages a couple identified of women at various locations circa 1920s. A circa 1915 photo-both strips; one having 2 poses the other four of a young Bertha Levy. The larger strip with the back stamp of Tarr 164 W. 126th St. A real-photo postcard of a larger photograph group-shot of a group of young girls between infant and young teen ages accompanied by 4 women. With the studio identifier of L.I. Harris The Pioneer Photographer of South Beach S.I. A group of 9 loose snapshots and a trimmed real-photo postcard. One identified on back as "Grandstand B.H.P. Sept. 30 1914" and another as taken at Garnerville Labor Day 1913. Ephemera: 13 Individual Rating Report Principal's Report on Teacher's Service for Bertha Liebovitz Levy at P.S. 68 and P.S. 70 1925 - 1943. Approx. 5 ¼" x 7 ¼" size. A couple of typed letters signed by Morris Scherer principal of P.S. 70 one regarding an award to be present to Ms. Levy the other a letter of condolence upon Ms. Levy's death. With 6 handwritten letters 1921 - 1941 complimenting Ms. Levy's kindness & teaching skills and also a request for information for details on a mutual friend's life. Condition: Some of the photographs with edge-wear creases others very good. Paper ephemera with old fold lines some ageing and wear. Overall the group in good condition. . Photgraphy. Not Bound. Fragile roan somewhat rubbed; some scattered foxing; a good sound copy. 12mo original tree roan professionally rebacked with brown Fabrikoid cloth new endpapers and the hinges reinforced with library cloth tape 131 1 pages. Hill relies on petroglyphs and other evidence to argue that the Native Americans are descended from the Jews. Hill here joins the queue of those who had made similar arguments; Rafinesque makes an explicit connection in the columns of his Atlantic Journal Autumn 1832 between Hill and his Antiquities Explained and the recently published Book of Mormon: "This opinion based upon some religious prejudices and slight acquaintance with philology and antiquities has been entertained by Penn Adair Boudinot and several other superficial writers among which Ira Hill author of a late work Antiquities of America Explained. Hagerstown Maryland 1831. It is to me astonishing how in this enlightened age any such unfounded belief can be sustained; if greater absurdities still did not prevail as yet among a few. Two recent instances of egregious folly based upon this singular tenet have induced me to republish my letter of 1829 which if read by those laboring under this delusion cannot fail to shake their belief. A new Religion or sect has been founded upon this belief! the Mormonites thus called after a new Alcoran or Book of Mormon which is not a Jewish name. Supposed to be written in gold letters more than 2000 years ago by Mormon leader of the American Jews. This Book which no one has seen nor read but the founder of the sect the probable writer thereof has been made the Bible of a new sect. I have tried in vain to procure a copy of the translation wherein I could certainly detect a crowd of absurdities and incongruities. Meantime a Sect of Fanatics has arisen therefrom and wandered from New York to Ohio and Missouri." Howes H-482; Sabin 31828.
