The Punjab Campaign although perhaps not one of the most brilliant was nevertheless of the greatest importance in its results First edition of this uncommon and important narrative of the Second Sikh War 1848-49 combining eyewitness account with an overview of the campaign; the author served with the 24th Foot at both Chillianwalla and Gujrat and gives excellent detail of both battles. This copy is stamped on the half-title "With the Publishers' Compliments". "The objective of this work is to supply from original and official sources information on some points of interest which have not been fully explained either in the Despatches relating to the Punjab campaign or in other sources also reviewing the current of events from the death of Ranjeet Singh to the period in question. There is detail about the battles of Ramnagar Chillianwalla and Gujrat" Chopra. Lawrence-Archer 1823-1889 was gazetted second lieutenant in the 39th Foot in December 1840 and served with the 24th Foot throughout the war. He went on half-pay as a captain in January 1869 and remained on the half-pay list until his death in February 1889. He spent his later years in the composition of a range of historical and genealogical works. Octavo. With 5 maps 1 folding; publisher's 2-page advertisement list at end. These orations provide a heroic account of Wellington's strategy and eventual victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. This volume is split into two parts containing 'The Battle of Waterloo. An Oration on the Military Exploits of the Duke of Wellington' followed by 'The Rise and Fall of Buonaparte. Alexander who fought in the Mexican Wars. Octavo vii 238 2 8pp ads. Brown cloth title stamped in gilt. Fraying of cloth at heel of the spine 2cm loss at head of the spine. Solid text block. Even toning throughout faint foxing limited impact to text. Complete with two folding maps including the "Plan of the Battle of Buena Vista" and "Map of the Country of Buena Vista." Bookplate of "T.L. Alexander / U.S. Army" on the front pastedown. Sabin 10905. Col. Thomas L. Alexander 1807-1881 a veteran of both the Black Hawk and Mexican wars graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1830 and entered the United States Army as a second lieutenant in the 6th Infantry. His long career included frontier service combat against the Sac Indians in the Black Hawk War Battle of Bad Ax service in the Florida Indian campaigns and distinguished action in the Mexican War at Vera Cruz Cerro Gordo Contreras and Churubusco for which he received a brevet promotion to major for gallantry. Rising to lieutenant colonel Alexander later served in senior administrative roles as Deputy Governor of the Military Asylum at Harrodsburg Kentucky and for six years as lieutenant governor of the Soldiers' Home near Washington D.C. He retired from active service in 1863. He was a founding member of the Aztec Club of 1847 along with future presidents Franklin Pierce and Ulysses S. Grant. His wife was a longtime friend of Mary Todd Lincoln often sharing correspondence and visiting the Lincoln's at the White House in 1864. Harper and Brothers unknown

Contains numerous short pieces concerning the vagaries of farming class distinctions courtship and other relevant topics to the people of nineteenth-century Great Britain.
