Large folio, First and Sole Edition, on fine laid paper, with 47 fine separate large collotype facsimiles, each accompanied by a printed leaf bearing the transliterated text with variants and revisions as appropriate; disbound as issued, uncut, the collection housed in the publisher's original and substantial cloth portfolio, front lettered in gilt, gilt back, with original lock, the portfolio neatly and skilfully refurbished at several joints and the whole work in very good, clean state. Mild bookplate scar on inner cover of portfolio. In addition to the superb facsimiles, the work includes the editor's preface, and printed leaves of errata, notes and index. 'Each page of the MS. has been represented as far as possible by ordinary type, the words and letters printed in italic being those which in the MS. are struck out by the writer. It will be observed that some words in italic are underlined in the MS. This is to indicate that although they had been struck out they were to be restored. The peculiarities which could not be represented by the use of ordinary type are recorded in the Notes.' (Preface). Milton's manuscript volume remains the chief treasure of the College Library. 2 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with a portrait frontispiece engraved on wood by Robert White after Lely, some moderate foxing throughout; attractively bound in early eighteenth-century panelled tree calf tooled in blind, backs gilt extra with five raised bands, compartments tooled to a floral design, leather labels gilt, sprinkled edges, joints of first volume worn and cracked (but binding entirely sound), corners of first volume lightly bruised, a very good, crisp copy with broad untrimmed margins. With a fine engraved armorial bookplate. The work, considered to be Swift's first publication, is dedicated to William III. Andrew Marvell was an English metaphysical poet, satirist and politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1659 and 1678. During the Commonwealth period he was a colleague and friend of John Milton. His poems range from the love-song "To His Coy Mistress", to evocations of an aristocratic country house and garden in "Upon Appleton House" and "The Garden", the political address "An Horatian Ode upon Cromwell's Return from Ireland", and the later personal and political satires "Flecknoe" and "The Character of Holland". Andrew Marvell (Winestead, 31 marzo 1621, Londra, 16 agosto 1678) è stato un poeta e politico inglese, parlamentarista e figlio di un prete della Chiesa anglicana (anche lui chiamato Andrew Marvell). Scrisse poemi di satira e di pastorale, che fece circolare come manoscritto, e la sua figura di poeta viene spesso associata a quella di John Donne, George Herbert e John Milton (di quest'ultimo fu anche amico e collega). Ebbe una prospettiva complessa della Rivoluzione inglese. Fu un puritano e amico di John Milton, ma fu moderato nella sua politica, e (a differenza di Milton) fu contrario all'esecuzione di Carlo I. Tuttavia, una delle sue poesie più note è un'ode in onore di Oliver Cromwell. Fu più famoso alla sua epoca per le satire, viene ora ricordato per i poemi di amore, specialmente To His Coy Mistress (Alla sua timida amante), in cui esorta la sua amata a non sprecare il tempo.
