A very good copy dustjacket art pasted in at front endpapers. AN EXTREMELY EARLY OUTING FOR OUR JUNGLE LORD AS THIS IS ONLY THE THIRD NOVEL TO FEATURE THE CHARACTER TARZAN. Unlike the later entries this title has no list of other works by Burroughs at the end. From humble beginnings would come great things as dozens of later Tarzan stories would prove. In time Burroughs hero would become one of the best loved characters in all of modern literature.
The novel is a fast-moving jungle adventure that begins after Tarzan has settled into married life with Jane and their infant son Jack. Tarzan’s old enemies the Russian villains Nikolas Rokoff and Alexis Paulvitch escape prison and kidnap the child as part of an elaborate revenge plot.
What makes the story distinctive from the previous two novels is that Tarzan survives not by returning to civilization but by embracing the wild completely. He allies himself with jungle animals — especially a panther named Sheeta and a tribe of great apes led by Akut — essentially becoming commander of “the beasts.†The first two novels were more about romance but now we enter an era of pursuit revenge survival and Tarzan’s profound connection to the natural world.
