Publisher's paper boards with parchment spine mounted half-tone photo of an elephant on the front board. Small tear at base of spine mild spine slant all else very good. Third edition and the first to include the map. Bella Woolf 1877-1960 was the sister of author Leonard Woolf and sister-in-law of Virginia Woolf. Her second marriage was to the British colonial administrator Tom Southorn and she wrote both fiction and non-fiction drawing on her experiences at his various postings. This book which was first published in 1914 is considered the first pocked guide to the island. It provides detailed information for the traveler including practical information on train schedules auto and rickshaw rentals climate currency etc. as well as many suggested itineraries with considerable detail of the history and culture of each site. An introductory chapter discusses Caylon's history and the inhabitants and their occupations and mode of dress and an afterword offers Woolf's reflections on "life below the surface that is only skimmed by the tourist" with particular attention to the lives of women. The Woolfs founded the original Hogarth Press in their dining room at Hogarth House in 1917. Over the following decades they published not only their own work including all of Virginia Woolf's major novels but also new writing by Katherine Mansfield T.S. Eliot E.M. Forster Gertrude Stein Christopher Isherwood Edith Sitwell and Henry Green. They also issued English translations of Anton Chekhov Maxim Gorky Fyodor Dostoevsky Leo Tolstoy Sigmund Freud Rainer Maria Rilke and Federico Garcia Lorca. In 1938 Virginia Woolf relinquished her interest in the business; Leonard Woolf ran the press in partnership with John Lehmann until 1946 when Hogarth became part of Chatto & Windus. See J. Orlando is the most imaginative indeed fantastical creation of this legendarily individualistic writer" n.b. quote from the Arion Press. <br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full green cloth over boards gilt lettering on the spine stated eighth impression on the title and copyright pages; duodecimo size 7 3/8" by 5 1/8" 299 pp. In the original publisher's dust jacket showing a price of "10s 6d net" on the front flap decorated on both panels with artwork by Vanessa Bell the sister of Virginia Woolf in rust and yellow over white short summary of book on front flap publisher's ad for other works by Woolf on the back flap. <br/><br/>___CONDITION: Fine overall with clean boards perfectly straight corners without rubbing a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright and entirely free of prior owner markings; the sole condition issue we see are a few pages with the bottom corner bent only a few millimeters else fine. The unclipped dust jacket near fine the panels and flaps clean other than a stray mark or two and the colours bright with a modicum of edgewear most noticeable at the tail of the spine toning around the perimeters and the spine sunned and with a few light spots.
