192650416London: The Hogarth Press 1926. First editions thus. Softcover. g to vg. Small octavos. Nine separate titles of the scarce "First Series" of "The Hogarth Essays". All are housed in a custom-made red 3/4 morocco over red silk clamshell box with gilt lettering on the spine that reads. "The Hogarth Essays. Nineteen Authors. The Hogarth Press. 1924-1926." These are pamphlets ranging in length from 24 to 48 pages with woodcut covers printed in either black or green on card stock wrappers. Our surmise is that a previous owner had the box made with the intent of acquiring all 19 of the essays but only succeeded in collecting 9 of them still a worthy task awaiting completion. Of these 9 already present two are of the scarcest and most expensive titles: Theodora Bosanquet's "Henry James at Work"; and Leonard Woolf's "Fear and Politics A Debate at the Zoo." All the issues were hand printed by Virginia and Leonard Woolf at The Hogarth Press and are being offered as a group along with the clamshell box.

Clamshell box with some light rubbing to extremities and some staining to the spine.
