O relato de Virginia inicia na �poca em que Elizabeth conheceu o poeta Robert Browning com quem pouco tempo depois ela se casaria ��s escondidas ""fugindo"" com ele para a It�lia. Foi um pouco antes disso que ela recebeu de presente da tamb�m poeta Mary Russell Mitford um filhote de cocker spaniel chamado Flush que teria um importante papel em sua vida. Para surpresa da pr�pria Virginia o livro foi um sucesso de p�blico. Em compensa��o foi praticamente ignorado pela cr�tica. Ou pior quando mereceu alguma aten��o foi apenas para ser classificado como uma pe�a que representava o fim da carreira liter�ria de uma grande escritora. O livro continuou relegado ao por�o das curiosidades liter�rias pelas d�cadas seguintes at� ser redimido no final dos anos 1990 pelo florescente campo acad�mico dos ""Estudos animais"". Mas n�o sem algum reparo: embora alguns lhe atribuam o m�rito de certo pioneirismo ao assumir uma vis�o menos antropoc�ntrica do mundo outros criticam-no por perpetuar a tend�ncia antropomorfizante que caracterizaria a literatura em geral.
