This publication is an annual cinema retrospective for the year 1928 discussing a range of various cinema topics and showcasing the most prominent national and international films stars and filmmakers of the year. The book was published by the "Las Noticias" newspaper "The News" 1896-1939 which at its height was the second most read newspaper in Barcelona. The main section of the text in interleaved throughout with numerous plates containing b/w photographic reproductions of the films international figures and theater locations discussed. The final paginated section contains 30 pages of mailing addresses of various national and international film figures in alphabetical order. Also included is a section with photographic reproductions showing the in-workings of the "Las Noticias" newspaper offices. The fantastic covers were designed by the Roldos-Rapid advertising agency. This may be the only year that this publication was issued.<br /> <br /> Text in Spanish.<br /> <br /> Wrappers with some rubbing and light chipping to extremities. Some smudges light foxing and creasing on the back cover. Interior with a few pages throughout with minor to light sporadic water stains/foxing with images and text largely unaffected. Pages throughout with age toning. Wrappers in good interior in very good- condition overall. Scarce. Protected by modern mylar. Las Noticias unknown

34041501London 1865 I.L.N. Single sheet full sheet woodcut etched very good clean solid copy 28.5 x 40.5 cm. R A R E ! This is an historic and important drawing. It shows a closed area where two of the numerous assassins who killed two British officers at Kamakura were put to death. The execution was conducted by the Shogun at the demand of the British Consulate to make examples of the counter revolutionaries who would not yield to the Shogun who agreed to allow foreigners into Japan. The scene shows a fenced yard with a large group of foreigners most likely British and Americans and a few Japanese officials and other onlookers who wait for the executioner's sword to lop off the head of the two Japanese murders. The caption also states: FROM A SKETCH BY OUR SPECIAL ARTIST for the I.L.N. meaning Charles Wirgman who was the resident artist at the time. This historic scene was sent to England where its citizens saw the retribution meted to the guilty Japanese assassins. . unknown

Offprint from Transactions of the Medico-Legal Society. In fair condition lightly aged central vertical fold rusted staples. 'No reasonable person' Riddell writes 'suggests the wholesale sterilisation of masses of lunatics and defectives. Only very moderate measures are proposed.' Riddell's suggestion is that 'in suitable cases subject to the consent of the Board of Control or some similar body' and with the consent of the subject lunatics and mental defectives be sterilised. He deals with three objections: that sterilisation constitutes an 'Interference with individual freedom' 'That sterilisation would lead to promiscuity and the spread of venereal disease' 'That sterilisation operations are dangerous.' Riddell's conclusion is that: 'Lunacy and mental deficiency are unpleasant subjects which most people are loth to face or discuss. The absence of any well-considered policy is apparent. … the cure interest and happiness of the individual lunatic or deficient are put before the general interest of the community. … Voluntary sterilisation would however make their task easier by enabling them to carry out their programme of restoring to the outside world as many lunatics and mental defectives as possible. It would also render easier the task of supervision in mental institutions. At the same time the public and relatives of these unfortunate people would have a measure of protection. Lunacy and mental deficiency must always be festering sores but the time has come when the whole subject requires careful consideration and statesmanlike attention.'
