The print which is entitled "American Sketches: Bathing at Long Branch New York" actually shows Long Branch New Jersey. 44009401Cornwall 1890 Carrick-White Ltd. Single sheet full-page woodcut engraved illustration 29 x 40.5 cm. very good a few tiny marginal mends on the verso else bright two half-page images. FIRST & ONLY RARE EDITION . With two half-page illustrations. The top shows the American gun ship under sail. . The second shows three Chinese and one young Englishman sailor smoking opium over and opium lamps. One Chinese is drifting in an opium stupor & dream the other three are seated enjoying the effects. There is a bottle of wine/beer by the seated Chinese man smoking a briar pipe. . On the back are two articles describing the two woodcut engravings. . The top engraving was drawn by J.W. Wells; the lower was drawn by P. Naumann with initials W.D.A. . Color photos are posted to our website. . . CONDITION: The work is an original period piece. It is clean and now solid with a few minor mends to the verso and a couple of old folds now straight near the bottom. The images are excellent no fading or other issues. Seldom found a very RARE example. . . unknown
