97531926. Dimensions of paper 23 x 17 cm; dimensions of image c.16 x 10.5 cm. In fair condition on lightly-aged paper. Captioned at foot 'Nathaniel Hawthorne'. Head and shoulders illustration with Hawthorne looking at the viewer with his head slightly towards his right shoulder. Placed in modern 34 x 26.5 cm cream card frame with gold and light-green border. Professionally executed in a traditional style. The artist's monogram centred beneath the illustration consists of a stalk topped by simple flower design and with the date '26' at the foot. A clue to the provenance of the piece may be the pencil marks on the reverse: '2035' and '9548a/86' together with the stamp '19 FEB. 1928'. [1926.] unknown

The copy of the recipient's letter from 12 Heath Villas Vale-of-Health Hampstead NW4 London; 11 October 1941. The four items in fair condition aged and worn. ONE: Copy of Typed Letter to the editor of the Evening News signed 'T' or 'P'. 1p. 8vo. Providing another solution in descriptive notation of a problem published on 9 October. TWO: Meek's first letter dated 15 October 1941. 1p. 4to. Headed 'Prob. by Lee'. Replying to Item One he writes: 'It certainly looks as though you have "cooked" the above problem with 1 . B-Kt8. The composer gave several "tries" but he evidently overlooked the move you have found. I will send your discovery to him.' THREE: Meek's second letter dated 30 October 1941. 2pp. 4to. Demonstrating that his suggested solution to 'problem by Shaw' fails. 'Capture or checking key-moves are usually regarded as a bad feature in a problem unless the subsequent play is of such a character as to justify such a move. The judges evidently thought this was the case in the other problem by Shaw which you refer to'. Concludes by informing him that 'Mr. Lee . admits the "cook" of course and says that it escaped a good many people besides himself'. FOUR: Meek's third letter dated 4 November 1941. Addressed by hand from '"Evening News" Chess'. 2pp. 12mo. Headed 're Prob. by Shaw'. Briefly restating the contents of Item Three which the recipient has not received. After many pages of reasoned argument examining all issues he concludes "On religious moral legal social & humanitarian grounds I beg to say that Capital Punishment is indefensible that it is wrong in principle that it is a perversion of reason that it is injurious in effect that it is blind blundering & cruel in its methods and that in all civilized countries it ought to be abolished." As the editor of the Manchester City News it would be reasonable to assume that this constituted a leading article at some time. This MS is accompanied by the following printed items: a. A printed invitation card in fact a postcard to a Public Meeting on 6 June postmark 1923 Cuming Walters named as one of those "supporters" of the main speaker The Bishop of Manchester; b. S. "Leander" shows a large Japanese military force disemparking from ships while Korean laborers unload Japanese gear. The lengthy caption below reads: "The transports came in at full speed dropped anchor & started disembarking the troops at once. Chemulpo harbour is very shallow & all but small craft have to lie a good two miles from the landing-place.The troops were conveyed ashore in Corean junks towed by a small steam-boat; they consisted ofabout 2000 men all infantry. Shortly after the arrival of the transports the cruiser 'Yayeama Kan' came in & anchored oputside them. The men fell in on the quay in good order without confusion. They were in heavy marching order & it is impossible to speak too highly of their equipment-they even carry binoculars. Everything they possess seems to be of the newest pattern; they are shod like English troops and carry a spare pair of boots; they carry the old pattern knapsack that the Prussian infantry used to-bullock-hide wit with the hair on-& are armed with magazine rifles. The men are smaller in stature but very sturdy; they did not appear to be in good spirits but the sea voyage might account for that; 10000 more are expected on the 11th including the Imperial guard accompanied by the Crown Prince as Major of Cavalry." The text outlines the rapid Japanese advance on Mukden & its capture on the Mikado's birthday. The Manchurians furiously protected their city with its 40ft. high & 20ft. wide walls.
