1938List2978San Quentin California 1938. Single 6 ½ x 8 ½ inch photograph caption affixed verso and marked verso “CALIF - STATE - PRISON SAN QUENTIN CALIFâ€. Folded at middle marginal wrinkling and small tears; fine contrast very good to excellent. A press photograph looking into the gas chamber at San Quentin Prison taken following the execution of Albert Kessel 1909–1938 and Robert Lee Cannon 1908–1938. The pair were the first to be executed at San Quentin using that method; they were two of five men executed for their role in an attempted escape from Folsom Prison that caused the death of warden Clarence Larkin and a guard. The photo’s caption reads in part:<br /> <br /> “Into these two black chairs Albert Kessel and Robert Lee Cannon were strapped today in the state’s first execution with use of lethal gas. A few seconds later the door was shut and made airtight; witnesses lined around the window and then the deadly cyanide eggs released.â€<br /> <br /> In 1994 the use of cyanide gas was ruled cruel and unusual and banned in California to be replaced by lethal injection; in 2006 a court order halted capital punishment in the state altogether though it is still legal. unknown

The issues were re-printed and distributed by the General Office of Jiangxi Provincial Government shortly after the editorials were published. Issues no. 9 and 10: single sheet printed on both sides pages numbered. Issue no. 14: two sheets printed on both side pages numbered. Staples removed leaving small pin holes edges torn a 5.5cm horizontal closed tear on lower section of Issue 9. Even foxing and some soiling. Text in Chinese. 26.5 x 19cm when folded. Flattened horizontal fold; toning to outer leaves. Very good. A single issue of this radical newspaper produced daily beginning on April 23 1970 by students at Yale. This issue published on the day of the epochal May Day rally on the New Haven Green held largely as a protest of the 1969 arrest of Bobby Searle and other Black Panther Party leaders. With information about the rally updates and history of the Panther trial information on legal aid faculty support etc. and with a brief "Comment" by Dale Kutnick urging nonviolence at protest events. This copy with the original insert containing a map of downtown New Haven service centers along with emergency contact numbers and a schedule of events including lists of speakers and music acts. A little-held publication; OCLC locates even fewer institutions with copies of this important issue. <br/> <br/> Strike News paperback

12998Various locations mostly Phoenix AZ 1980. 24 leaves illustrated with twenty-three mounted photographs plus dozens of mounted ephemeral items including letters documents certificates newspaper clippings and more plus a folder laid in containing television prompt copies. Folio. Contemporary brown vinyl scrapbook string tied. Minor overall wear some old tape stains to most items some items apparently re-mounted likely by a later friend or family member. Overall very good. A wonderful scrapbook celebrating the professional career of Evelyn Lorraine Thompson 1948-2005 on-air reporter and news anchor for KOOL-CBS Radio and Television and KTVK-TV in Phoenix Arizona in the 1970s. Thompson worked for KOOL straight out of college after graduating from Boston University in 1972. She was hired as a writer-producer for morning newscasts then worked as a full-time news reporter. Unusual for the era Thompson also served as KOOL's weekend sports reporter. She later moved to KTVK-TV also in Phoenix where she worked as a news anchor. We could find no other information about Thompson following about 1980 except for her brief obituary in the Arizona Republic.<br /> <br /> The present scrapbook provides a valuable snapshot of Thompson's life and early career through a range of original photographs showing her as a child but with the majority showing her during her working years at KOOL and KTVK. The album also includes numerous letters to Thompson from a variety of correspondents thanking her for stories congratulating her for her positions at the news news releases and other documents announcing her personal appearances newspaper clippings when Thompson appeared in the paper either for a story or as the subject of a story and so forth. The scrapbook even includes the prompt copy of a speech given by her before sorority students at Northern Arizona University. For a deeper look at her life as a reporter or anchor a number of additional prompt copies of some of Thompson's stories are gathered in a manila envelope laid into the scrapbook. The scrapbook also includes award certificates most notably her award as one of the "Outstanding Young Women of America" in 1973. Altogether a unique assemblage of original materials documenting a trailblazing Black reporter and news anchor in the contemporary American West. unknown

Each issue runs for 8 pages printed on double sided. Binding very poor but the issues themselves are in good condition. Text in Chinese. 38 x 26.1cm. Working copy only. The 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona were the third Olympic Games the People's Republic of China participated in after a long absence 1956 - 1980. <br> <br>China won 16 gold 22 silver and 22 bronze medals in total and ranked 4th at that game. Many historical records were achieved for the Chinese team including a big breakthrough for the swimming team winning a combined 4 golds and 5 silvers. Text in Chinese. 26.1 x 18.7cm. The Self-defence War against Vietnam also known as the Sino-Vietnamese War took place on the borders between the two nations from 17 February to 16 March 1979. Editorials in this collection mainly exoll Chinese military victories in Yunnan and Guangxi provinces.
