194863621Olympia WA: Department of Labor and Industries Industrial Welfare Committee Dec. 29 1948. Folio. 1 broadside leaf minor creasing to folds very minor age toning to fore-edges still a VG copy. First edition thus of this scarce Minimum Wage Order updating rules for women and male & female minors following World War II as they were steadily pushed out of the well-paying manufacturing and office jobs from the War to make way for returning veterans. Although this particular order includes restrictions on adequate lunch and break periods safety and sanitary requirements as well as Progressive heating lighting and ventilation women and minors were still subject to employers deducting for shrinkage and breakage until the January 23 1950 update Order No. 46. Until the New Deal legislation reforms of the Great Depression both women and minors were not subject to minimum wage laws largely due to the 1923 laissez-faire labor law case Adkins v. Children’s Hospital of the District of Columbia which had ruled that it was a violation of the Fifth Amendment’s right to free contract to force employers to pay women minimum wages. This ruling was overturned in the landmark case of Elsie Parrish suing her employer in the State of Washington in the West Coast Hotel Company v. Parrish in 1937. Near fine with a few light stains to margins of card. <br /> <br /> Very nice photo of a ball club from one of the hotbeds of women's baseball in the early 20th century. Evidence of women's teams in the state goes back to at least 1893 with photos documenting several competitive teams. We could not trace the name of this team but the ages of the women are early 20s suggesting a college amateur or perhaps church team. 1929 was an interesting time with softball gaining popularity nationwide and many women's teams transitioning from baseball. <br /> <br /> . unknown

19274616Cleveland 1927. Good. Three serial works: 432; 511; 471pp. All bound in original printed wrappers stapled. Mostly minor wear and dust-soiling to wrappers some chipping. Middle work worn and chipped with text block and both covers detached but present and no loss of text. A trio of works recording the minutes of three separate annual sessions of the North Ohio Conference Branch Women's Mite Missionary Society of the A.M.E. Church between 1924 and 1927. The meetings were held in Youngstown Cleveland and Alliance Ohio respectively. Each work prints the officers and members of the N.O.C.B.W.M.M. Society as well as each conference's daily activities the minutes of the Executive Board meeting various officer and committee reports and more. One of the more interesting features of the works is the two-page table which concludes each work listing the various societies throughout Ohio their president and corresponding secretary and detailed financial data. All three pamphlets also contain the text of the President's Report or Annual Address providing details on the leadership activities of the group. The first two pamphlets have an ownership signature on the front wrapper belonging to Miss Veetta Jackson of Alliance who almost certainly attended all three annual sessions and is listed in the Conference Branch Roll of the third year when the event took place in her hometown. OCLC records microfilm or digital records for a couple of years apparently 1922 and 1926 at a handful of institutions but does not report any copies for any of the annual reports present here in any format. unknown

Removed from a volume of sheet music published from 1835 to 1850 with former owner's name on the front: "E. C. K. Seymour." Contains melody with keyboard accompaniment. No date of publication. Frederick D. Benteen d. 1864 was active as a music publisher from the 1830s until his death in 1864. Helen Selina Sheridan married Commander Price Blackwood in 1825; he died in 1841. In the words of this song the author warns men against marrying "such a charming woman" although Myrtle's flaws consist of being well-educated and not rich. Very scarce. In Good Condition: lower corner of first leaf detached and archivally repaired; lower corner of second leaf creased with 2-cm. closed tear archivally repaired; light soiling and foxing. F.D.
