Royal Navy and US Navy cruisers and destroyers responded engaging and driving off the NRA soldiers and Chinese rioters evacuating many foreigners including the families of Hobart & Ayscough to Shanghai. First edition of this very rare report on Continental Air Lines efforts in modification of aircraft during World War II. Due to personnel shortages women were trained in large numbers with the Emily Griffith Opportunity School who also received training in sheet metal fabrication welding and metal casting to handle bomber retrofits for over 2500 B-17 and B-29 bombers as well as 25 P-51 Mustang fighters and 6 additional experimental B-29 bombers. The airport facility in Denver erected two 600 x 400 foot hangers and continued hiring skilled labor. Quarto 31 cm Elegantly bound by Brian Frost and Company Bath England in brown leather with raised bands a gilt stamped title and floral designs on the spine and double gilt ruled borders on the boards. Turn-ins gilt. With very light wear to the extremities including an almost invisible moisture ring to the front board. The pages are clean and bright. With one hundred and eighty illustrations of which forty are in color. One in an edition limited to 1000 copies.<br /> <br /> Billingsley is considered one of the foremost names in British porcelain. His remarkable ceramic achievements and accomplishments have been recognized and held in high esteem continuously by both aficionados and technical specialists alike since the year 1790 when as a young craftsman at the renowned Derby China Factory he was suddenly called upon to assume the role of head flower painter in completing an important order for the matching of some valuable early Chelsea plates with profuse botanical plant decoration. <br /> <br /> This copy is signed by W. H. John on the front flyleaf. It is also inscribed by Sir Leslie Joseph to the Duchess of Bedford Nicole Russell: "Her Grace the Duchess of Bedford from Leslie Joseph." Nicole Russell 1920-2012 was one of the first female television producers in France working on projects which included "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes." Also notable is the fact that she had been a courier for the Resistance in Paris during the Second World War. In 2003 Russell spent some time living in Santa Fe New Mexico. According to Anne Constable The Santa Fe New Mexican while living in Santa Fe she Russell wrote to Queen Elizabeth II suggesting that fake fur be substituted for the bear skin used in the hats worn by her guards. The cover graphic portrays a WW1 doughboy missing both his legs being carried into his home by a pair of mates. The interior text argues that the League of Nations at this time being actively opposed by the Republican majority in Congress was the only sure path to preventing a repeat of the horrors of the Great War. An interesting and fairly early attempt to mobilize the women's vote; equal suffrage had been granted in California in 1911. Wrapper illustration by Andre de Takacs of an older black man playing a ukulele with two Hawaiian women peeking through the bamboo behind him. Publisher's advertisements inside front wrapper and outside back wrapper. Bill Bailey plays his "old guitar" called Ukalele in Honolulu; the lyrics include references to the hula and to the women's suffrage movement. The musical instrument the ukulele was first popularized in the continental United States during the Panama Pacific International Exposition held in 1915 from the spring to the fall in San Francisco. The Hawaiian Pavilion at the exposition included a guitar and ukulele ensemble. This song was one of a number written by Tin Pan Alley songwriters in response to the sudden interest in this instrument. In Very Good- Condition: crease across lower right corner of front wrapper; small creases along edges; 1-cm. tear from spine near head of spine with adjacent creases without loss; small loss of paper at head of spine; lightly soiled.
