A very good copy.

A French language investigation into the "secrets" of Tibet by the phenomenally interesting and fearless Alexandra David-Neel; spiritualist anarchist world traveler opera singer and author of almost 40 works on a variety of esoteric subjects. She visited Lhasa in 1924 during the period when it was forbidden to foreigners which was something of a depressing habit of intrepid Westerners during the period and her esoteric mystery writings ended up being widely circulated in the 1950's-60's inspiring some of the most notable figures in the Beat and proto-Hippy movements including Ginsburg Kerouac Ram Dass and others. In 1899 at the age of 28 she penned an anarchist tract that was too inflammatory for general publication and was only disseminated in a minisucle privately printed form she had already converted to Buddhism ten years prior and in the dying years of the 19th century she cemented her desire to become an orientalist learning sanskrit and various Tibetan dialects. She drifted in and out of the Theosophical society was embraced by early feminist groups was first singer at the Hanoi Opera House under the name of Alexandra Myrial and between 1911 and 1946 devoted her life to various tours and expeditions around Tibet China and South East Asia. In 1937 she became embroiled in the Second Sino-Japanese War and was forced to wander almost penniless through remote parts of China for a couple of years before entering a reteat in Tachienlu in Tibet in 1938 where she remained for 5 years only returning to the West to settle the estate of her husband who had died suddenly in her absence. After a long lifetime of adventure discovery and ceaseless searching for mystery she died in Digne Les Bains in Southern France in 1969 and remains a mostly forgotten figure in the field of esoteric and cutltural exploration.
