Knowledge of the family and kin groups is fundamental to understanding the development of the political and legal framework of the polis, a community of oikoi ('families' or 'households') rather than of individual citizens. Pomeroy offers a highly original and authoritative account of the Greek family as a productive and reproductive social unit in Athens and elsewhere during the classical and Hellenistic periods, taking account of a mass of literary, inscriptional, archaeological, anthropological, and art-historical evidence. Despite the unflagging scholarly interest in the development of the polis, until recently little attention has been paid to the history and structure of its smallest constituent, the oikos. Pomeroy seeks to show that the Greek oikos had several versions: a pseudo-kin group restricted to male citizens; a mixed family group oriented toward the public, in which men predominated; and a family group of a more private nature that accommodated women to a greater extent, though without necessarily excluding men. Public legislation and private custom concurred to perpetuate the oikoi, expecting it to endure longer than the lifespan of any individual member and to bear economic and social burdens imposed by the state. ; 272 pages

Il libro si configura come un vero e proprio ciclo di catechesi (sono state trasmesse a Radio Maria nel 2009-2010); un itinerario di riscoperta del sacramento del matrimonio e della vita di coppia come luogo di esperienza di Dio e come forma di evangelizzazione del mondo.La presenza di Gesù nella vita degli sposi cristiani è ciò che fa la differenza. Per questo è importante alimentare l'unità piena con lui: con la purificazione del cuore, con la preghiera vitale, con la frequentazione della sua Parola, con l'Eucaristia. In merito a questi suggerimenti l'autore propone alla coppia piste di azione e passi concreti.
br. "Questo libro è dedicato agli sfgti. D'ora in avanti definirò gli sfgti con la sigla 'mdf', ovvero 'morti di fg', decisamente più moderna. Il mdf ha un'altra caratteristica peculiare: non solo la fg la vede sì e no col binocolo, ma soprattutto se ne fa un cruccio notevole, ogni volta che ne vede una sbava e scalpita, vorrebbe ma non può. I manuali su come trattare le donne esistono da tempo immemorabile, ma la loro efficacia è sempre stata relativa. Recentemente hanno preso piede anche i corsi di seduzione, spesso tenuti da abili "P.U.A." (ovvero "pick up artists", cioè "artisti del rimorchio", l'esatto opposto del mdf), magari danno anche delle buone idee, ma il difetto sta sempre nel manico, ovvero: il mdf, causa la sua forma mentis, fa spesso una fatica enorme ad applicare i consigli e i suoi sforzi rischiano perennemente di ottenere il risultato opposto. Io qui voglio tentare un approccio più estremo: ovvero, tenere conto del fatto che non mi sto rivolgendo a persone di media capacità seduttiva ma, appunto, a mdf che devono partire da zero e per i quali nulla è scontato."
