Govern wrote two years after the landmark Roe V Wade decision: “I have purchased and read your book ‘The Final Secret Of Pearl Harbor’…It was enlightening what you said about Roosevelt…his indulgence resulted in his contracting polio at a time when his life-forces were at a low ebb and he strained his body in his cocky forceful way…I think the Japanese in America got a cruel deal at that time in our concentration camps…I have always been in sympathy with them…I lived a decade in the shadow of Loma Linda University Medical Center Hospital…Everything is very sensational…One young doctor told me that in less than his intern year he performed over two hundred abortions – mostly on teen-agers. Yet he advocated the law of God – The Ten Commandments one of which is ‘You shall not kill.’ The value of human life is at a very low ebb at this time in earth’s history – cheap…Patients are landed on the roof of the hospital via helicopters. Così anche in Italia, negli oltre 40 anni trascorsi dall'approvazione della legge 194 e dal referendum che l'ha confermata. Nei primi anni Duemila, dopo l'approvazione della normativa sulla procreazione medicalmente assistita, il governo di centrodestra riapre il dibattito politico sull'applicazione della legge, cercando di rimettere in discussione il diritto delle donne a decidere del proprio corpo e della propria vita. E allora il movimento femminista, con le sue eccedenze, alleanze, condivisioni, torna a far sentire la propria voce. Questa volta l'onda parte da Milano, da una mail che la giornalista Assunta Sarlo invia a colleghe e amiche: "Care tutte, ma dove siamo, dove siete? Stanno facendo la guerra alla nostra libertà. Non so come, ma c'è bisogno dei nostri pensieri e della nostra opposizione". In poche ore la rete si riempie di risposte di donne, le più diverse. Partono una serie di iniziative e assemblee, migliaia di donne si rendono conto che la partita dell'autodeterminazione in materia di interruzione di gravidanza è ancora e sempre aperta e riprendono parola contro l'attacco portato dal fronte conservatore e dalla Chiesa. E allora si torna a manifestare. Il 14 gennaio 2006 Usciamo dal silenzio (Uds) porta in piazza Duomo a Milano 200.000 donne e non pochi uomini, in una delle più grandi manifestazioni di donne mai registrate nel nostro Paese.
