Guilbert was a wonderfully talented printmaker. The first features 50 full-page drypoints almost all depicting quiet picturesque corners of Paris many with buildings that have been demolished since the war. The buildings are the focus and people if present are of little importance. Opposite the images are lyrical evocations by Marie-Louise Fraysse. From a total edition of 290 numbered copies this is ONE OF 20 tête PRINTED ON EXTREMELY FINE ARCHES WOVE PAPER WITH AN ORIGINAL SIGNED DRAWING there are actually two here AND THE DRYPOINTS IN THREE STATES: first state with remarque second state with remarque and final state. Although not called for there is also a planche réfusée in two states. The second suite comprises six SIGNED drypoints of the main sights: Notre Dame the Arc de Triomphe etc. Unlike the melancholy images of the first set here we see Paris bustling with life. From a total edition of 150 numbered copies this is ONE OF ONLY 34 tête PRINTED ON EXTREMELY FINE ARCHES WOVE PAPER WITH THE DRYPOINTS IN THREE STATES: first state second state with remaruqe and final state. Limited first edition thus illustrated by Laboureur master of interwar French engraving - handsomely bound by a contemporary French woman binder Marie-Louis H. Farge. First published in 1918 LES SILENCES DU COLONEL BRAMBLE was a popular novel about a French officer working as an interpreter with the British during World War I and based on Maurois's real experiences. Marie-Louis H. Farge's work has touches of fin-de-siècle aesthetics mixed with the harder geometries of modernism. A 1929 notice in ARTS ET MÉTIERS GRAPHIQUES PARIS for an exhibition of around fifty bindings by Farge remarks on her unusual combinations of tools and ornaments. Laboureur was a highly acclaimed engraver of the same era his limited editions highly sought and often serving as the foundation for fine bindings as here. 9'' x 6.25''. Contemporary half goatskin by Marie-Louise H. Farge spine stamped in gilt and blind. Marbled endpapers top edge gilt. Original wrappers bound in. Bombal was a fascinating woman friends with Borges and Neruda who nicknamed her "la abeja de fuego" "the fire bee"; she once shot a lover three times and was acquitted after her lover exempted her from guilt. La Última Niebla extensively revised and published as House of Mist was first published in Argentina in 1934. According to the National Library of Chile Bombal's novels La Úlitma Niebla and La Amortajada mark the beginning of the contemporary Chilean novel. Published in the U.S. the year before this edition the London edition seems to be much more uncommon. OCLC locates eight copies only two in the U.S. UC Santa Barbara University of New Mexico.
