DESCRIPTION - Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis 1839-1908 a mulatto was Brazil's greatest prose fiction writer. Of humble origin Machado de Assis was in large measure self-taught. During the liberal empire of nineteenth-century Brazil color and class were not insurmountable obstacles as the success of many men of similar station and color attests. Machado de Assis rose from typographer to upper level civil servant with relative ease. According to the contemporary Brazilian critic Antonio Cndido the only moment when his color seemed to be an impediment was when he married a white Portuguese. From all indications her family objected to the match. Obviously Machado de Assis's color meant little or nothing to his bride and the couple enjoyed a long and reportedly happy marriage. Machado de Assis counted among his friends many talented and distinguished Brazilians. The Brazilian author was an extremely private person who led the quiet and somewhat regimented life of the civil servant and devoted the remainder of his time to his writing and to his wife. Understandably his creations and his genius have elicited much speculation about Machado de Assis the man. Despite the many works that have delved into his life the enigma of this man of genius remains unsolved. The character of Machado de Assis has been maligned and vindicated by the many people who have written about him. He emerges as quite a different person from the man of the legend. What becomes immediately apparent is that he was too subtle for his detractors. It is true that he was more concerned with the perfection of his art than with taking a militant role in social causes. Nevertheless he took his stand on the issues and his perception of them was farsighted enough to comprehend more than their immediate implications. His art is a testimony to his success and fulfillment in his life's goal. He did not wish perhaps to be known as a black white or mulatto artist but as an artist. His concerns reflect a desire to be accepted in his unique identity a desire common to all great artists and even to lesser human beings. inventory #9474 hardcover
