In a darker story for Beatrix Potter she retells the classic folk tale of Bluebeard. It is told from the perspective of Anne the sister to the eighth wife of Bluebeard. 154 pages. 12 full page illustrations done by Katharine Sturges. First edition first issue. The frontispiece illustration incorrectly tipped in opposite page 7 instead of the title page as it was in later copies. It is one of the lesser known of Beatrix Potter's work and is different from her famous stories like Peter Rabbit in both style and subject. There are 34 gorgeously done prints brown ink on 100% cotton acid free paper. Each printed image has a tissue guard and is enclosed in its own gray folder with a number and an excerpt of text printed on it. There is also a separate booklet with an introduction by Maurice Sendak included. It is all contained in an original slate blue cloth-covered clamshell box. The story was based on a village shop in Sawrey owned by John Taylor when Potter bought Hill Top farm so the book is dedicated to him. <br />From the personal library of MAURICE SENDAK with his Jennie bookplate pasted verso front free endpaper. Laid in is a Sendak notecard with a design from <i>The Bat-Poet</i> inscribed <i>"A very special book for very special Lynn -- on her Birthday! With all my love Maurice May April '90"</i> the recipient being Lynn Caponera who began working for the artist in 1972 as caretaker of his Connecticut house and eventually became his care-giver chief beneficiary and president of The Maurice Sendak Foundation.
