198675467Washington DC: United States Air Force Office of Air Force History 1986. Reprint. Trade paperback. Very good. ix 1 194 pages. Illustrations. Footnotes. Notes. Glossary. This is one of the United States Air Force Special Studies. The board was established in 1944 under the name Scientific Advisory Group with General Henry H. Arnold as the military director and Dr. Theodore von Kármán as the board chair. The group was asked to evaluate the aeronautical research and development programs and facilities of the Axis powers of World War II and to provide recommendations for future United States Air Force research and development programs. The group's name was changed to the Scientific Advisory Board in 1946. The United States Air Force Scientific Advisory Board SAB is a Federal Advisory Committee that provides independent advice on matters of science and technology relating to the Air Force mission reporting directly to the Secretary of the Air Force and Chief of Staff of the Air Force. In the past it has provided advice on technologies such as: supersonic aircraft weather forecasting satellite communications medical research crewless airplanes and defenses against aircraft and missiles. Ample evidence for the important of the Scientific Advisory Board SAB roles and accomplishments in the years 1944-1964 can be found it its many studies and in official project histories. This volume seeks to present a source book on SAB membership and organizational and operational turning points during these years. It should also be made clear why for example the Hoover Commission in the mid-1950's judged the SAB to be 'the best top structure for tieing in of science' it had seen within the government and why Lt. General James Ferguson board military director announced in 1964 that the SAB had 'grown immeasurably' in important to the Air Force and was poised to become of even greater importance in the future.
