1997acs1160Palm Harbor: IBIS Graphics 1997. Quarto softbound stiff photo. illustrated slick turquoise wrappers vi 184 pp. Illustrated with numerous photographs. Fine. From Preface: This book was created not as the result of a scientific study or Doctoral paper but as a direct result of wanting to learn more about the mysteries of the past. Its organization is simple. by common names with the correct scientific genus and species supplied where possible. There are common and uncommon fossils illustrated with the sole purpose of aiding the reader in identifying what they may find. I have intentionally stayed away from using museum collections and instead focused on fossils housed in the private sector. It is in every sense a book by non-professionals for non-professionals. This book is not intended to show every possible type of fossil known from every geologic period but rather a small representation of specimens from the last thirty million years. Chapters like shark’s teeth fish and birds could and undoubtedly should each warrant a complete volume. I’ll leave those volumes to others. Instead I hope to provide an overview of selected mammals from the Miocene through Pleistocene Epochs. I have attempted to choose one or more views of each specimen in order to show the recognizable features of that specimen. Particularly notable features have been annotated for ease of recognition. All specimens are dimensioned in inches with the dimensions given for that particular specimen only. Individual specimens within a species may have a varied range of sizes based upon age sex and conditions of fossilization. Not every specimen photographed is in perfect condition. Occasionally specimens have been restored but in most cases they are in “as found†condition. IBIS Graphics, 1997. paperback
