196882640Washington DC: Service Center for Teachers of History American Historical Association 1968. Presumed First Edition First printing. Wraps. Good. Format is approximately 6 inches by 9 inches. 4 59 1 pages. References. Cover has some wear and soiling. This is a little known and increasingly scarce work by the U.S.'s most renown Sinologist. The American Historical Association has a long-standing commitment to teaching and history education at all levels and supports teaching in a wide variety of ways. From its inception the Association has been committed to the collection preservation and dissemination of historical documents. In keeping with that tradition the AHA staff digitizes and posts essays reports and other materials from the Association's past. As the principal umbrella organization for the profession the AHA's history reflects that of the profession as a whole. In 1889 the association was incorporated in the District of Columbia by an act of Congress: "for the promotion of historical studies the collection and preservation of historical manuscripts and for kindred purposes in the interest of American history and of history in America." The act provided that the association should have its offices in Washington DC and that it should make reports regarding historical matters to the secretary of the Smithsonian Institution who should then transmit to Congress such reports as he or she saw fit. The teaching of history has been an AHA concern since its inception. At the K-12 level the AHA took a leadership role in the National Education Association's Committee of Ten 1893 which established the importance of history in the emerging secondary school curriculum. John King Fairbank May 24 1907 - September 14 1991 was an American historian of China and United States-China relations. He taught at Harvard University from 1936 until his retirement in 1977. He is credited with building the field of China studies in the United States after World War II with his organizational ability his mentorship of students support of fellow scholars and formulation of basic concepts to be tested. The Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard is named after him. Among his most widely read books are The United States and China first published in 1948 and revised editions in 1958 1979 and 1983; East Asia: The Great Tradition 1960 and East Asia The Great Transformation 1965 co-authored with Edwin O. Reischauer; and his co-edited series The Cambridge History of China. In 1929 when he graduated from Harvard summa cum laude he went to Oxford as a Rhodes scholar. At Oxford Fairbank began his study of the Chinese language and sought the counsel of H.B. Morse retired from the Imperial Maritime Customs Service. In Beijing he studied at Tsinghua University under the direction of the prominent historian Tsiang Tingfu who introduced him to the study of newly-available diplomatic sources and the perspectives of Chinese scholarship which balanced the British approaches he saw at Oxford. Fairbank returned to Harvard in 1936 to take up a position teaching Chinese history and was its first full-time specialist at Harvard. He and Edwin O. Reischauer worked out a year-long introductory survey covering China and Japan and later Korea and Southeast Asia. Following the outbreak of the Pacific War in 1941 Fairbank was enlisted to work for the US government which included service in the Office of Strategic Services and the Office of War Information in Chongqing the temporary capital of Nationalist China.
