"This exhibition, curated by Edith Devaney, Curator of Contemporary Projects at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, presents a survey of Stephen Chambers' painting and graphic works, shown alongside his vast multi-part print, The Big Country. This selection seeks to explore the origins of The Big Country (2012), demonstrating that its development is firmly rooted in the artist's past practice and deeply indebted to the European tradition of art. The sense of a story being told is a feature of many of Chambers' works, and writings are often a stimulus for this, as seen in Chambers' Flemish Proverbs series, which are also exhibited. Inspired by the landscape and scale of the American Western film The Big Country (1958), Chambers' immense work explores a myriad of fictional encounters between real and imagined historical figures. The notion of the journey and discovery of new lands has here expanded into a depiction of the five continents and the points of departure from one continent to another, raising a fascinating take on the perils and challenges of migration. Stephen Chambers is primarily a painter, however printmaking has always formed a significant part of his work. He has noted in the past that prints produced by artists whose main discipline is not printmaking, can often be the most compelling. For such artists, print-making offers another element of expression and provides an opportunity to experiment, a notion which is borne out in Chambers' finished monumental work.".

Chaïm Soutine (1893 1943) was a Russian painter of Belarusian Jewish origin. Soutine made a major contribution to the expressionist movement while living in Paris. Inspired by classic painting in the European tradition, exemplified by the works of Rembrandt, Chardin and Courbet, Soutine developed an individual style more concerned with shape, color, and texture over representation, which served as a bridge between more traditional approaches and the developing form of Abstract Expressionism. As New English Paperback. Pbo. Mint. Oblong large 8vo. (21 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. Color ills. 32 p. "Solange Greco, the wife of the Consul General of Brazil in Istanbul, will display her paintings at an exhibition to open at Istanbul's Tunnel Art Gallery on April 1. After attending the classical Institute of Fine Arts for a couple of years, Greco was accepted to the workshops at the Museum of Modern Art, where she had classes with important painters of that time. She had her first exhibition in 1966 in Rio de Janeiro and another in 1970 in Brazil. After getting married to a diplomat, she had the opportunity to travel to many countries. Her paintings reflect the different cultures of the places where she has lived. Greco, who moved to Istanbul in 2011, has been very much touched by the cultural exuberance of this metropolis, as she said in her message in the catalogue of the exhibition. "It is impossible to paint an image of Istanbul leaving aside a cat or a dog, a bridge, fishermen, towers, minarets or even the wonderful mosques. "Stating it is not enough just to paint what you see, Greco said, "Any good camera can do this. It is important to go deeper if you want to disclose what the bare eyes cannot see. I think the heart of a nation lies in the simple people. That is why I took my time to observe them doing their routine work, especially on Istiklal Avenue." It is possible to see some of them in her exhibition at the Tunnel Art Gallery: the shoeshiner, the simit seller, the lottery vendor and others.".
