An early American survey of agriculture and agricultural practices with information partially borrowed from Spurrier and Bordley as well as some gleaned from the author's own polls. On drink Roberts writes "I would wish to introduce the drinking of beer in this country for the common drink; knowing by experience that it is the most wholesome beverage made use of therefore recommend it to private families to brew their own beer." There are also a few pages on cider and some discussion of grasses. Veterinary interests extend to a cure for Botts a worm particularly damaging to horses. There is also information and useful recipes regarding gypsum plaster salt and 'stuffing boots'. ~ Contemporary tree calf a little eroded at spine ends red morocco spine label titles in gilt; spine gilt-ruled. Age-toned and lightly foxed throughout but still a very good copy. With the bookplate of culinary collector Marcus Crahan and earlier period ink ownership inscription of the 'Buckingham Library' to the front paste down. Scarce. Rebound in brown cloth. Leather spine label. Hardbound. Very Good. 'Squire' Job Roberts 1757-1851 was a remarkable man of Welsh Quaker decent. He was born lived and died in Whitpain close to Gwynedd and for many years he was one of the most conspicuous figures in the farming business and social circles of Gwynedd. He did much to improve the methods of farming planted hedges introduced the feeding of green fodder to cattle instead of grazing built a barn which was enormously large according to the usual standard and very early introduced the use of gypsum on fields. He was one of the first in Pennsylvania to introduce and breed Merino sheep and during the movement to establish the manufacture of silk he was one of its most zealous promoters. In 1791 Gov. Mifflin appointed him a justice of the peace and he continued as such until 1820 when he resigned and returned to farming and other entreprenureal pursuits. S&S/AI 7203; Sabin 71898; Rink 1148.
