Volume I covers 1515-1849 while Volume II spans 1850-1950. Volume I is 40 pages plus a large collection of black and white plates. Volume II is 37 pages plus another large collection of full-page black and white plates. Inclusions in this work are restricted to painters for whom, in at least one known painting the inclusion of representational flowers, fruit or still life has been of major importance. This definition allows the inclusion of many of the almost unknown illustrators who, working for scientific or horticultural publications have nevertheless served the two masters - Art and Science.
