First Edition of Lyon's narrative of his voyage in the Griper in 1824 in quest of the north-west passage by way of Hudson's Bay. Lyon managed to penetrate into Roes Welcome midway between Wager Inlet and Repulse Bay before he was driven back by bad weather. He here enumerates the difficulties encountered and provides interesting observations on the Esquimaux of the Southampton Islands immediately north of Hudson's Bay. The appendix to the narrative includes botanical researches by W.J.Hooker describing fifty-three species mostly from the Southampton Islands and notes by E.N.Kendall on the magnetic errors of the crew's compasses. First edition an important coverage of the native peoples that George Francis Lyon encountered while commanding Hecla on Parry's second expedition in search of the north-west passage; Field notes that "almost the entire volume is devoted to the narration of the peculiarities of the Aborigines of the Arctic regions". Commissioned lieutenant in 1814 George Francis Lyon 1795-1832 accompanied Joseph Ritchie's abortive expedition into southern Libya in 1818 having replaced Frederick Marryat publishing a well-received account of his travels in 1821 the same year that he was promoted commander and "appointed to the Hecla under the orders of Captain William Edward Parry in the Fury. The expedition Parry's second in the search for the north-west passage sailed on 8 May 1821 entered the Arctic region through Hudson Strait examined Repulse Bay and the neighbouring coast of Melville peninsula and wintered at a small island to the eastward of the Frozen Strait. The next summer they went further north and entered Fury and Hecla Strait but the season being then far advanced they turned back wintered at Igloolik lat. 69°21' N long. 81°44' W and came home in autumn 1823 as signs of scurvy among the crew made it inadvisable to stay. On 13 November Lyon was promoted captain and the following year he published The private journal of Captain G. F. Lyon" ODNB. The next year he led an unsuccessful expedition to Repulse Bay with instructions to continue the survey of the mainland Begun by John Franklin. His Private Journal proved popular and a second edition swiftly followed the next year. Octavo 204 x 127 mm. Engraved frontispiece and 6 plates after the author's sketches engraved by William Finden large folding route map musical score to pp. 134-5. 19311123031931. Rare half-tone portrait of Canadian golf legend George Lyon. Signed by Lyon "Geo. S. Lyon." Period frame. The entire piece measures 8.25 inches by 5.75 inches. In very good condition. Although he only began playing golf at the age of 38 due to lack of available golf courses in most areas of Canada before that date George Seymour Lyon won the gold medal in golf in the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis Missouri at age 46 only eight years after beginning the sport. He won the Canadian Amateur Championship a record eight times between 1898 and 1914 the last time in his 56th year. He was also runner-up in that event on two further occasions. He won the Canadian Seniors' Golf Association Championship ten times between 1918 and 1930 the final time in his 72nd year; these events were staged before the inauguration of the Canadian Senior Golf Championship by Golf Canada. unknown

Most relevant photos measure around 2½†x 3½†and most are captioned. Album very good with moderate wear; photos generally very good or better. <br /> <br /> This album was compiled by Lyon P. Strean who was originally from Montreal and later was a resident of New Rochelle New York. Strean was an accomplished dentist who also held a doctorate in bacteriology and published over 25 scientific papers throughout his career. He edited a medical journal in Brooklyn and wrote at least two books. <br /> <br /> Strean was active in the Jewish community of Montreal where he was vice-president of Independent Order B’nai B’rith. Mount Royal Lodge. No. 729 and was later president of the Westchester New York Lodge. A clipping in the album shows that he was also secretary of the New Rochelle chapter of the Zionist Organization of America. Over half the album includes family photos and news clippings which cover a brief period of Strean's career. <br /> <br /> Importantly a 14-page section is entitled “Remembrances From the Israeli War of Liberation May 15-Sept 1 1948. Yomim Hazikoron†and holds 87 photos taken in Israel. A full-page clipping in the album shared that Strean was in Israel for three months as a consultant to the Israeli government on public health. He gave a talk stateside where he described conditions in Jerusalem when the city was cut off from supplies and how he was involved in testing 24000 refugees for sexually transmitted diseases. That article also mentioned that Strean had slides made of pictures taken in Israel to go along with his talks. <br /> <br /> There are many images of Rehovot including birdseye views the synagogue a shot of people milling about in a market and one shows bomb damage. Other images of war include people rationing water an air-raid shelter a view of “No Man's Land†and streets with road blocks. There's a shot of a Displaced Persons camp one of a demolished building with the caption “War in Israel 1948†and another captioned “Bus Station-Tel Aviv. Bombed at 6 p.m. 130 killed.†At least nine photos are celebratory and depict parades and rallies at a stadium for Independence Day. Other photos include several great street scenes in Haifa and a birdseye view of the city and seaport from Mt. Carmal. There are also a number of images in Jerusalem including the King David Hotel several in Tel Aviv and several of kibbutzim. <br /> <br /> A lively and well captioned album with many images of Israel soon after it achieved statehood. unknown
