Dustjacket. 75pp. each numbered & captioned page faces a full page unnumbered plate. Light wear and sunning to the edges and spine ends a strong and solid copy; internally clean Inscribed by Lyon to the dedication page "In Memory of Jade Danny Lyon Nov 2005"; in a sold dustjacket with some wear and scratching of the laminate shallow chipping to the spine ends and a couple of closed tears. A very good copy with some wear uncommon signed.<br /> <br /> Lyon returned to New York in 1969 after his work in Texas and the South with the SNCC and lived for a while with Robert Frank of "The Americans" fame. During his stay Lyon was commissioned by the New York State Council of Arts to cover the demolition of a number of landmark buildings including old Penn Station. Lyon's work was notably instrumental in the development of the landmarks preservation movement; "The Destruction of Lower Manhattan is a historical record of a fast disappearing scene and a beautiful portrait of buildings that we will never see again; but in a way it is also a portrait of the people who lived there of empty rooms with children's paintings furniture stairwells walls windows panelings."From the opening blurb. First edition of this exceedingly rare supplement catalogue for the Ford Model T issued in 1914 by the remarkably successful California Automobile Motor Supply Company founded in 1904 on Main Street in Los Angeles. This California Brass Era auto accessory firm grew rapidly and within a few years was the largest exclusive auto accessories supply firm in the West Coast. The firm specialized in all parts which were NOT standard equipment for the rugged Model T and other auto manufacturers selling speedometers substantially improved magnetos electric head lamps oil lamps improved timers carburetors brake linings shock absorbers mats trunk racks and the very necessary anti-theft device the Universal Ford Crank Lock. Early car theft was a tremendous problem because starting most vehicles only required pushing the car to start compression or jacking up the rear wheels and attaching a portable motor and belt. In 1916 Chanslor & Lyon left the retail field and focused instead on their wholesale operations primarily marketing Lee Tires. The 'Note of Fees' is 1p. 4to and comprises 11 charges totalling £44 2s 0d. Docketted on reverse. Among the charges are: 'Herald Painter for painting writing and Emblazoning Arms in Patent £2 2s 0d' 'Herald Painter's Charge for Sketches both of the Arms of Lord Balgray and Miss Robertson: - one in colour given to his Lordship Seven in pen and Ink sent to him at Ormiston Hall and one given to Learmouth & Co. Coachmakers £2 2s 0d' together with 'Lyon Clerk for Extra Trouble £6 6s 0d'. The receipt is 1p. 12mo and is docketted on the reverse 'Note of Fees of Arms For Miss William Boyd Robertson of Lawers Novr. 1814.' It carries two embossed four pence tax stamps is signed by 'James Horne Lyon dept.' and reads: 'Edinburgh 18th. November 1814 Received from Mrs. Robertson Williamson by the hands of Messrs. Dundas & Rollo W.S. Forty four pounds two shillings Stg being in full payment of the annexed note of the Fees of her Patent of Armorial Bearings.' The 'Note of Fees' dated November 1814. Lyon remained in this role until mid-1964 when fraught internal politics and his own ambitions meant it was time to move on. Julian Bond who helped establish the SNCC describes Danny Lyon's photographs as 'helping to make the movement move.' Lyon referred to his work as a photographer as 'the existential struggle to be free.'<br /><br />Additional photographs are by Bob Adelman Don Charles Frank Dandridge Roy DeCarava William DuBois James Forman Robert Frank Declan Haun David Heath Matt Herron Jill Krementz Leroy McLucas Norris McNamara Marion Palfi Tony Rollo Enrico Sarsini F. Light wear and soiling to extremities and end papers soiled otherwise in fine condition. 285 pp. 3 plates. <br/><br/><em>The rare first Japanese translation of W. P. Lyon's anti-evolutionary text ' Homo versus Darwin'. It constitutes the very first publication in Japanese to reject Darwin's theory. A year after the publication the book was banned for 'corrupting public morals'.The present work is Lyon's reply to the publication of Darwin's The Descent of Man. Here he sees Darwin being charged by Homo of denying him from being a creature made by a God and declaring man to be merely some kind of animal. The author is recorded as being 'Eisa Gurei' Asa Gray but in 1986 a study confirmed the text to be a translation of Lyon's work.'Saru no Saiban' is an important work in the history of the reception of Darwinism in Japan. Darwin's theories had a profound influence on Japan and Japanese culture but in a slightly different way than in the West: Darwinism was marked as social and political principles primarily embraced by social thinkers philosophers and politicians to advocate the superiority of Japanese culture and society and military and not by biologists and zoologists. "It was as if Darwin's famous oceanic journey and the meticulous research into the animal and plant kingdoms that he spent his life undertaking had all been staged as an elaborate excuse for composing a theory whose true object was Victorian society and the fate of the world's modern nations." This introduction maps out the plan of the series and was sent out shortly after the prospectus. It was later printed as part of the first volume of the series. Photographer has titled dated and signed on verso of matting: "McHenry Illinois. Oct.1965. Danny Lyon." Photograph shows some trivial wear to extremities a diagonal crease to upper right corner and faint spidering across center; Very Good. Mild toning to mat board with some scattered foxing and a few faint stains. An outtake from Lyon's 1968 debut The Bikeriders his attempt at recording and glorifying American motorcycle culture. "McHenry Illinois" depicts a member of the Chicago Outlaws motorcycle club of Cicero Illinois mounting his girlfriend in a field of grass and wildflowers. Lyon lived and traveled with the Outlaws between 1963-1967 becoming a member of the club and immersing himself in all aspects of their activities. Bright fine copies. <br /> <br /> Two volumes of sight reading exercises for beginning piano students "the illustrative idea being employed to stimulate the child's attention and interest in his work." Of course this idea piggybacked on the immense popularity of the story by Helen Bannerman which had been illustrated by John R. Neill and others in what Langston Hughes called the "pickaninny" style. The noteheads and vignettes in these pieces all display the stereotype. <br /> <br /> Lyon who also released flash cards and staves in this series was a musician composer and children's book illustrator who spent her entire life in Coos Bay Oregon. She illustrated Ida Turney's Paul Bunyan: The Work Giant among others. She lost a finger and thumb in a car accident but continued composing and performing in her seaside studio overcoming her disability. <br /> <br /> <br /> OCLC does not mention this series nor do we find it elsewhere. <br /> <br /> <br /> . Small hole-punch to the upper right corner and to which would normally be attached a small with a string lacking in this case. A fascinating piece of Manitoba ephemera. The booklet comprises of an exhaustive list of names of students staff faculty departments and which are accompanied with their respective addresses phone numbers. Replete with many advertisements by sponsoring local business merchants. Introductory messages from the Dean various other heads of departments as well as invitations and introductions by the various heads of student clubs bus schedules from the Winnipeg Electric Company and much more. Light wear to the covers neat period ink name to the upper-margin of the front cover else contents remain bright clean and unmarked with tight sound binding; fine. Scarce with no known extant copies available in commerce at time of cataloguing. Not found in Peel BAC/LAC University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections.
