Publisher's forest green cloth with a decorative design and horizontal stripes stamped in blind on both covers and spine titled in gilt. Spine and edges toned spine and textblock at the spine base spotted modest wear at corners and spine ends bottom edge with a faint stain affecting only a few leaves with a tiny marginal tidemark very good and sound. Mormon poetry by a Scottish poet with all benefits going to the LDS perpetual emigrating fund. Dedicated to apostle F.D. Richards the book contains a poem about the author by apostle John Taylor as well as poems titled "The Press" "The Prophet" "Reflections on a Bank Note" songs and hymns and poems written to various Mormon notables. Lyon. At Cambridge in Massacusetts May 1954.' The text of this first copy pruduced nine months before the play was to debut is mostly mimeographed with a few typed leaves and has ink and pencil corrections in the author's hand. Laid in loose is a 3 x 5 inch card with an original poem by Phelps abouit the Matchetts signed and inscribed Christmas 1962. 71193 leaves printed or typed recto only. Bound in original burgundy 3-brad wraps with clear plastic window in upper cover showing title spine faded. Later published by Harvard University Press for the Poets’ Theatre this moving three-act verse play is based on the atmosphere prevalent during the Salem witch days of Puritan New England. It tells the story of family happiness destroyed by the panic of the community. Matchett were both principals at the Poets' Theatre. Lyon Phelps paperback

This unique copy has a superb presentation inscription from the author 'For Billy William Matchett - this copy: not the first but it should be not the last but I wish it were so lest it be thought the middle. Let me add for one who received the MS after dealing with the thing itself the print of play or poem is after the fact - Love Lyon.' In addition there i a marked-out section of text at pages 51/52 and inserted loose to replace it are two typed pages of a substantially larger replacement text inscribed in ink by Lyon at end. Also included is the original folding invitation for the opening at The Poets' Theatre February 14 1955 silkscreen and letterpress as well as the rare poster advertising the British premier of the play by the Makars at the Gateway Theatre Edinburgh 9.5 x 15 inches 2 colors creased at folds with slight wear to edges. Original white printed wraps slight spotting and wear. Matchett were both principals at the Poets' Theatre.
