The Polar Star expedition comprising a crew from Italy and Norway aimed to reach the North Polar by sailing as far north as possible and then continuing by sledge. The Pole was not actually attained but the sledge expedition pushed on to a new highest latitude and indeed the Polar Star reached the highest latitude ever achieved by a ship following the coast-line. Three of the crew perished during the sledge journey.Prince Luigi Amedeo Duke of the Abruzzi 1873-1933 was an Italian mountaineer and explorer. A member of the royal House of Savoy he was briefly an Infante of Spain as the son of Amadeo I of Spain and a cousin to King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy.Arctic Bibliography 10423. hardcover

This is a record of the lectures given by the Duke of the Abruzzi and Umberto Cagni about their North Polar Expedition in 1899 and 1900. The expedition on the Stella Polare reached 86deg 34'N and thereby surpassed the highest northern latitude previously attained by Nansen in 1895. Accompanied by the supplemental atlas volume containing 18 plates on 17 sheets all folding plus three maps and the plate list and index. A detailed and profusely illustrated account of the explorations of the Baltoro region by the Duke of the Abruzzi during which he made multiple attempts on K2. The Abruzzi Spur on that peak is named for him and is the standard route today. He ascended that to about 6250 meters. He also climbed Chogolisa but was driven back by bad weather about 150 meters from the summit. Vittorio Sella's photographs of the region from the expedition are among the finest of the period.
