Publisher's original dark green cloth gilt. Minor edge wear hinges starting or tender some dust soiling and staining to boards. Modern bookplate on each front pastedown. Very good. First British edition translated from the Italian of the rare and profusely- illustrated account of the harrowing journey of the Polar Star towards the North Pole. Luigi Amedeo's expedition beat Nansen's record for "Farthest North" though Luigi wasn't with the expedition at its apex being unable to continue after losing two fingers. "With nineteen men the Duke of Abruzzi sailed in the steam brigantine STELLA POLARE June 1899 to Archangel and thence across Barents Sea to Rudolph Island Franz Josef Land to winter in Teplitz Bay and to undertake marches on the ice of the Arctic Basin in attempts to reach the North Pole. The sledge party's farthest was 83°16' N. The ship returned during Aug.-Sept. 1900. The leader's narrative of the expedition includes detailed notes on ice conditions experienced throughout in formation on personnel equipment food and dogs weather polar wildlife and nature; the second section has account by U. Cagni of the sledge march.and report by Cavalli Molinelli on health conditions during the expedition." - ARCTIC BIBLIOGRAPHY. In two volumes with 212 illustrations in text 16 full-page photogravure plates 2 panoramas and 5 coloured maps. Complete all plates maps and panoramas as called for. Shelf wear front inner hinges splitting both volumes minor spotting to page edges. Neat presentation inscription dated Christmas 1903 otherwise contents clean. A lovely set. In 1899 the author organized an expedition towards the North Pole. In spring he arrived in the Norwegian capital Christiania the present day Oslo with 10 companions. The duke acquired the Jason a steam whaler of 570 tons renamed it Stella Polare "Pole Star" & took the ship on the expedition through the frozen Artic Sea. The members of the expedition sought to reach the North Pole by way of Novaya Zemyla and the Franz Joseph Archipelago. They sailed as far north as possible and then continued their trek by sledge. While they did not reach the North Pole they did reach the highest latitude ever attained by sledge at that time. Originally published in Italian this first edition in English contains 2 folding color maps in the back pocket of the second volume. This is the first UK edition. Quantity Available: 1. Deep blue cloth covers are scuffed and rubbed a little though remain attractive with bright gilt cover image and lettering. The top hinge internal of Volume I is slightly cracked and both hinges of Volume two are broke. Volume I remains tight. Volume II is a little shaken though webbing remains intact and volume is reasonably solid. Light foxing on end leaves. A few slight handling smudges though overall both volumes remain clean. The Polar Star expedition comprising a crew from Italy and Norway aimed to reach the North Polar by sailing as far north as possible and then continuing by sledge. The Pole was not actually attained but the sledge expedition pushed on to a new highest latitude and indeed the Polar Star reached the highest latitude ever achieved by a ship following the coast-line. Three of the crew perished during the sledge journey.Prince Luigi Amedeo Duke of the Abruzzi 1873-1933 was an Italian mountaineer and explorer. A member of the royal House of Savoy he was briefly an Infante of Spain as the son of Amadeo I of Spain and a cousin to King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy.Arctic Bibliography 10423. hardcover
