About The Book : Skin diseases account for a large proportion of the cases coming to homoeopathic physician who is constantly faced with the challenge of proper diagnosis and treatment. Holmes began his medical career as a general practitioner but shifted into academics, becoming professor of anatomy and physiology at Dartmouth (1838-40), dean of Harvard Medical School (1847-82). He published two important medical lectures, including this one - promoting scientific discoveries in opposition to the practice of homeopathy, phrenology, and other `alternative' therapies. (The other was on the nature of fevers). His main fame though comes as a poet, novelist, biographer, and essayist. Most famous of these are `The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table' (1858) and several subsequent volumes where he presents imaginary conversations at a Boston boardinghouse, full of Holmes's urbane opinions, charm, and wit.
