47481London: Atlantis Bookshop Michael Houghton 1950. Contains the first six issues of this 9short-lived periodical put together as a single volume. "For many years occultism has been the hunting ground for confusing systems unworkable techniques and grotesque interpretations of those levels beyond man's normal and limited vision. Therefore we hope whenever possible to publish and review such subjects as may disentangle the vast phantasmagoria misnamed occultism and bring a sense of proportion to these secret sciences of the illuminated". Pp.412slight toning to endpapers. Cream paper-covered spine a little soiled black cloth boards. Scarce. G. "Michael Juste" Michael Houghton the editor of this journal was a poet Crowleyite publisher and owner of the Atlantis Book Shop in London. In 1927 as "Michael Juste" he had published his An Occult Autobiography recounting his occult explorations with Paul Brunton Theosophy and Crowley to that date. This journal published more than 20 years later was filled with the writings of the aging post-War post-Crowley post-Theosophy literate and sophisticated British occultists of the period all dabbling eruditely in art literature and magic. Houghton's editorials in each issue reveal his own lack of satisfaction with teachers of wisdom and the direction taken by current occultism generally. In the first issue he wrote rather snobbishly: "The broad theme of occultism has thus been presented in this journal from many angles. The editor who has been a close student of occult matters for many years first sets forth his general answer to the query of his title: How Important is the Study of Occultism He dissociates himself and the Occult Observer from peasant superstitions and from the shallow exploiters of the arcane and claims that occultism is only for the strong and passionate and that often the occult powers work unconsciously and through artistic genius." .IAPSOP. 1820000569Reading: Gedruckt fur Charles MWilliams 1820. Hardcover. See Description. First American Edition. 12mo. 142p. With a dramatic woodcut frontispiece depicting the Anti-Christ as a seven headed dragon. Re-bound in quarter calf with marbled boards preserving the original calf spine. Title page shows age-toning soiling and staining; a small darker spot of staining is present near the upper corner. The inside margin of the frontispiece is carefully restored with some spots of loss to the inner black border-line of the illustration. End papers are stained; notations in an early hand are scrawled on the front free end paper. Interior pages contain light age toning scattered marginal foxing soiling and wear. A German mystic named Christian Armbruster penned this apocalyptic work first published in Germany in either 1813 or 1814. The author predicts the immanent end of days by comparing current events at that time i.e. the rise of the Emperor Napoleon to the prophecies in the Book of Revelation and in the Book of Daniel. Armbruster makes much use of dates and numerical mysticism. American editions of his book contain a frontispiece of a seven headed dragon and are falsely attributed to the more famous mystic Heinrich Jung-Stilling. Uvarov 163 listing a Binnigheim 1813 edition; Holzmann/Bohatta 9368 listing the Ulm 1814 edition.

Gedruckt fur Charles MWilliams hardcover
