1598955341598. 1598. Fair. - An original holograph document attractively penned in an unknown hand on 13-1/4 inch high by 15-5/8 inch wide cream paper. Fifteen lines boldly penned with several flourishes signed "Christophorus Popel Barro a Lobcowicz" by Christoph Popel Baron of Lobkowicz who was Chief Steward of Bohemia under the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. The document is further annotated with 8 lines penned across the center of the verso with an unidentified signature and another 8 lines penned vertically on the verso above the center panel also with an unidentified signature. The faint remnants and outline of a red wax seal are centered at the top and bottom edges of the verso. Folded twice vertically and four times horizontally with several tears along the folds. There is some foxing present especially at the top and bottom. Good. <p>The Chief Steward of Bohemia under Emperor Rudolf II Christoph Popel Baron of Lobkowicz 1549-1609 was a close friend of the celebrated court painter Hans von Aachen. Lobkowicz who was known for his language and diplomatic skills was tasked with welcoming visitors from within and without the Holy Roman Empire to the Emperor's Court and for negotiating alliances in the war against the Turks. Lobkowicz was responsible for the peace negotiations with the Polish King Sigismund. Lobkowicz spent considerable sums on art work for his residence and commissioned jewelry precious watches and valuable objects. He was buried in the chapel in the Prague Cathedral. [1598]. unknown

Engraving redolent of colonial Hong Kong from a sketch by an engineer of the China Squadron Charles E. Eldred the Hong Kong Almanack for 1891 lists him as being aboard the British vessel Victor Emmanuel. The Hong Kong Polo Club also had strong military ties as the original commentary attests below the Secretary of the Club was a Staff Major Fletcher of the Royal Artillery. <br> <br>"This meeting took place on November 28th having been post poned on account of bad weather. The Chinese coolies were much interested in the bagpipes of the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders probably because to their ears the sound bears a very close resemblance to that produced by a common Chinese instrument something like a flageolet. Within the enclosure almost the only people not English were the Chinese chair-coolies and the mah-Joos grooms. The chair-coolies cluster outside the Grand Stand the balcony of which is occupied chiefly by ladies. The professional coolies were naturally highly interested in the Chair Races which were the most amusing events in the programme. In the Fai-Tee Stakes the gentlemen amateurs appeared in regular coolie-costume. One of the riders borrowed his bagpipes from one of the Highland pipers; but they proved his destruction for when his team came to grief just outside the winning-post he sat on the ground playing his pipes and deafening himself to the shouts of the judges who were endeavouring to inform him that he had not passed the winning-post. In our picture the pipers have been accidently omitted.-Our engraving is from a sketch by Mr. Charles E. Eldred H.M.S. Cordelia Hong Kong." Text accompanied by small handcoloured illustrations showing the minor criminal offences described above. 7 x 3cm section of loss upper section of colour woodblock upper cover stain lower cover upper cover and first two leaves lacks lower cover but contents are complete neatly rethreaded. Still an attractive copy of a fascinating and scarce item. A fascinating insight into crime and punishment in 1880s Japan this little booklet provides colour-illustrated explanations of minor crimes with details of the punishments which apply to them in Shiga Prefecture. It appears to have been designed for distribution to the public - perhaps to shops small businesses etc. From it we learn amongst other things that you could be imprisoned for between 3 and 10 days or fined a sum between 1 and 1.95 yen for giving lodging to a foreigner without recording their address properly. A sentence of 2 to 5 days imprisonment or a fine applied to people who sold raw fugu highly poisonous without proper treatment sold the meat of diseased animals offered photos or woodblock prints of the Emperor and Empress for sale or cremated the dead without official permission or in a place other than the officially approved cremation sites while a sentence of between 1 and 12 days applied to crimes which included flying paper kites near overhead telegraph lines. . 今井喜兵衛. Each postcard has an illustration of a melancholy young Japanese woman dressed in a kimono printed around her are the words and musical score of a folk song from one of 5 Japanese regions - Akita Kusatsu Yoneyama Kagoshima and Yamanaka. This set of manga postcards were published in1933 by Nippon Life Insurance Company to promote the benefits of life insurance. <br> <br>Nippon Life Insurance Company was established in Osaka in 1889. <br> <br>Instead of presenting figures and tables each manga tries to illustrate the sense of reassurance people would experience when they buy this company's insurance. For example a manga by Okamoto Ippei a famous manga illustrator in the pre-war Japan depicts a "Family Boat" where young and old members each wear a lifebelt represent their insurance policy while sailing. Its caption says that a insurance policy is a rescue buoy for life which would make people feel peaceful even on the roughest of seas. Another card features a young attractive geisha sitting coquettishly at home is an advertisement for an old age insurance policy. The text assures the viewer that their policy will be paid back in full when the policy matures. The couple plan to use the money to fund the granddaughter's honeymoon trip and their own holiday anticipating that they would live long enough to receive the matured fund. . [日本生命保険株式会社]. WWII map of China showing most of China Indo-China Thailand and Korea with territory captured and controlled by Japan shaded in orange and red published by the Chicago Daily Tribune barely six weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbour. The text on the map reads "Since 1937 China has been at war with Japan. Lacking many essentials of war the Chinese nevertheless have managed to maintain a front against the aggressors. China's principal life line is the Burma road shown on the map which starts at Lashio Burma and extends to Kunming Yunnan province where it links with connections to Chunking the present Chinese capital". <br> <br>Based on a Rand McNally map the Tribune briskly got to work issuing maps for readers showing the beginnings of the war with Japan. 1580032567Antverpiae Antwerp: Ex officina Christophori Plantini Architypographi Regii 1580 An extremely scarce original copy in soft cover vellum binding printed and published by Christopher Plantin and with his printer's device on the title page. This work is a contemporary account of events in the Netherlands during the period of armed rebellion against the rule of Philip II of Spain and its subsequent repression. The activities of Mathias Holy Roman Emperor who was invited to be Governor of the Netherlands in 1577 in promoting a Catholic revival have been said to be contributory to the Thirty Years War. The work was edited by Aggaeus Van Albada an extremely able who was principal speaker for the Netherlands at the peace talks that followed the rebellion. Christopher Plantin whose major printing house was in Antwerp suffered personally in the conflict - only saving his business from destruction by paying ransoms to the Spanish soldiers. This copy is in a full vellum soft binding. The boards appear contemporary with the remains of ties at the back. The spine is newer and possibly applied with glue - the book is quite tight to open particularly at the beginning. The binding is a little grubby but sound. Newer blanks have been added at the beginning and end and are a little dog-eared. Contents: title page with printer's device and a couple of ink letters; summa privilegii 1p; text with decorative initial capitals pp 1-338; ad lectorum 339-340; quotation 1p; printer's note 1p; blank; typographus lectori with superscriptio pp 345-351. Given the age of this book the contents are in good clean condition. There is a light stain in the bottom margin that extends upwards into the text which is persistent throughout but which worsens at the end of the book. Pages are lightly toned. A very small piece of the paper surface from a marginal note has detached at p328 and been deposited on p329 but the original text is still visible. One hundred and eighty four hand numbered pages in this remarkable 500 year old handwritten manuscript ledger journal and diary : " 1505 Gendenze di Saviz - gnano" as stated on the cover. The first page begins: "Libro de tuto _____ quale so tato asan__giano ala venuta mia. To Alexandro salueto schrise e soto schrise de mia gnovia mar." Not written by a scribe this is a working journal and ledger containing hundreds of business entries purchases loans and repayments. There are long lists of foods and prices for what is assuredly shopping lists for parties and feasts. There are also what appears to be observations and business maxims and poetry in a number of entries. Certainly this fascinating book requires more research. The original vellum cover is in somewhat rough shape with tears rubbing and bumping and is barely attached to the text block though still held by the rear binding cords. Interior is in excellent shape save for the odd and to be expected ink blot age-toning and light soiling. 156298780Milan 1562. 1562. - Folio 12 inches high by 8-1/2 inches wide. 1-page on bifolium with a red paper seal. On the 4th leaf with the seal the letter is addressed "APRmo 5 Mons : Vescovo di Cremona". The letter realized in a secretarial hand is dated April 5 1562 from Milan and is boldly signed by Francesco Fernando dÁvalos d'Aquino d'Aragona.<p>Philip II King of Spain and Duke of Milan chose Francesco Fernando dÁvalos to be his envoy at the Council of Trent. He arrived in Trent on March 14 1562 and attended the sessions of the council. He pressed the Spaniards to not offer up anything against the interests of the Holy See. Upon his return to Milan he charged his secretary Ercole Pagnano with the task of generating a report. As the Governor's agent Pagnano had defended the privileges of the Sicilian monarchy and worked with the Spaniards to quell the controversy regarding the jurisdiction of bishops. In this letter to the Bishop of Cremona the Governor is offering Pagnano's report to him. Loosely translated he states that Pagnano is well informed about these things and that "V.S." Your Excellency should be given his account.<p>The letter was once folded into 4 panels and there very minor breaks along 3 of the folds. There is some minor browning especially to one of the folds. <p>An advisor to King Philip II of Spain Francesco Fernando dÁvalos c.1530-1571 took command of the Spanish army in Lombardy and Piedmont succeeding the 3rd Duke of Alba who had become the Governor of Milan. From 1560 to 1563 Francesco Fernando served as the Governor of the Duchy of Milan. He was the viceroy of Sicily from 1568 to 1571.<p>The Bishop of Cremona was born Niccolo Sfondrati in 1535 in the Duchy of Milan. Philip II of Spain appointed him to be a senator in Milan in 1552 and at the urging of the Spanish government the Pope appointed him Bishop of Cremona in 1560. He participated in some of the sessions of the Council of Trent from 1561 to 1563. In 1590 he was one of seven cardinals that were acceptable to be pope by Philip II of Spain. He was elected Pope and took the name Gregory XIV. He died less than a year later in October 1591. Milan, 1562. unknown

Small Cartouche At Lower Left Monogram With Text "Caesavece Matis. Privilegio Mdxcii" In The Plate Added After Original 1591 Printing. This Is An Unfolded Sheet Which Was Never Bound In A Book; A Strong Impression Without Damage And With Old Light Partial Coloring. Once Quite Aged Then Professionally Cleaned De-Acidified And Mounted Loosely With Archival Materials By A Museum-Experienced Conservator In About 2000. Scarce. 1522032982Coloniae: Heronem Alopeciu 1522 An extremely scarce early edition published in September 1522 - a month after the authorised Basel edition - by Hero Alopecius in Cologne. We have only been able to find one reference to it University of Toronto. Erasmus arranged publication of the Basel edition in August 1522 in response to the appearance of an unauthorised version in Cambridge in 1521. He had originally worked on the content in 1509-1511 and this work developed from his earlier writing and lectures became a popular and important text book on the writing of letters. It was much reprinted. This copy is newly rebound in full calf with panelled design to boards and gilt titles to spine. The page edges are red although this may not be contemporary. New endpapers. Contents with 2 initial blanks - the first with ink notation on the edition - this looks likely to be 1800's in date and the paper does not look contemporary. Title with elaborate design including 2 cherubs holding a shield with 3 crowns with contemporary latin note at the top; letter from Erasmus to Nicolao Beraldo pp 2-4; text with beautiful decorative initial capitals pp 5-414 Finis. No final blanks. There is some scholarly annotation in latin and gentle underlining - this could be contemporary. There are a number of mispaginations but the ties work in all cases: 47-74-75-50; 51-78-79-54; 55-82-83-58; 59-98-87-62-63-90-65; 170-117-172; 177-168-179; 192-191-192-193. There are a number of professional paper repairs: to the side of the title page and page 13/14; from p 357 onwards where the top corner tips had been burnt out - this begins with the just the tip but towards the end of the work includes some page numbers and just clips a couple of margin notes - the final 2 leaves have repair to sides. These corners do not have the red edges. Towards the end of the work there are a few pages with some grubbiness at the bottom corners. Otherwise the work is very clean with high quality paper.
